Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Nation, Vol. 6 For over 130 years the United States and Great Britain had been in dispute over the right to take fish in north Atlantic waters, Great Britain stoutly insisting that its citizens had exclusive privileges in this line. The feeling at times ran so high that there was imminent danger of armed interference by one, or both of the powers, and on several occasions there were forcible seizures of fishing craft which were said to be violating the treaty of 1818. Under this latter treaty the people of the United States were given liberty, in common with British subjects, to take fish of any description along the southern coast of Newfoundland, and certain parts of the Labrador coast. In return for this the United States renounced forever the right to fish within three miles of the coasts of British North America not included in the specially exempted territory. So far as mere fishing rights were concerned the treaty of 1818 was plain enough, and there was no reasonable grounds for misunderstanding or dispute. Trouble arose over the right of Americans to obtain supplies of bait fishes in the waters of Newfoundland, the only place where they are to be had. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Country, Vol. 4 of 6: A Household History of the United States for All Readers, From the Discovery of America to the Present Time When news of the arrival of the French at Newport reached New York, Clinton ordered the British fleet there to bear an army to Rhode Island to attack the newly arrived enemy. He detached about eight thousand men for that service. The militia of New England flew to arms, and the French longed for the British to come; but the expedition did not go out of Long Island Sound, and soon returned to New York. Clinton now attempted, by the aid of treason, to accomplish what he had failed to do by honorable war fare. The man who played the part of a traitor to the American cause on that occasion was General Benedict Arnold, a brave soldier, but a bad man. He was ambitions of personal renown, impulsive, rapacious, unscrupulous, and vindictive; personally very unpopular, and seldom without a quarrel with some of his fellow-officers. The sad story of his treason has been so often told in detail, that we need to give it in general outline only.
