Download or read book The Bounden Duty of the Progeny written by Ann Graham and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the Robert E. Lee Camp, No. 726, of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Alexandria, Virginia. The period covered is 1927 to 1977, the first fifty years of this camp's existence. Necessarily, the period from 1890 to 1926 is covered also, as there were repeated efforts made to organize a camp during those years. The book is organized into eight chapters. The first chapter is the history of Lee and M. D. Corse Camps (1890-1926), to the extent such details can still be found, including snippets of local history and current events. The second chapter provides the early history of Robert E. Lee Camp, No. 726, chronologically by year, both in narrative style when sufficient detail could be found, as well as enumeration of dates and meeting locations when only that information was available. Special events and ceremonies merit focused coverage by chapter; e.g., both Confederate Memorial Day observances and Lee Birthday Banquets are covered in more detail, as they are the cultural backbone of camp events over the years. Finally, there are separate chapters on Camp Commanders, Meeting Locations, Membership and Finance, and Projects and Special Events. Depending on the subject matter and the sources used, this history is written partly conversationally, partly journalistically, and partly as if it were the minutes of a meeting.

Book Synopsis Lee's Aide-de-Camp by : Charles Marshall
Download or read book Lee's Aide-de-Camp written by Charles Marshall and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Marshall was appointed aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee on 21 March 1862, and from then until the surrender, he stood at the general?s side. A military secretary, he compiled a remarkable, intimate account of the day-to-day wartime experience of the Confederacy?s most celebrated--and enigmatic--military figure. Marshall?s papers are of three sorts: those intended for a projected life of Lee, those intended for an account of the campaign at Gettysburg, and notes on events of the war. Collected here, these papers provide a unique firsthand look at Lee?s generalship?from the most complete account ever given of the fateful orders issued to Jeb Stuart at Gettysburg, to the only testimony from a Southern witness of the scene in McLean?s house at Appomattox. Marshall?s commentary addresses some of the war?s more intriguing questions: Whose idea was it to fight the second Manassas? What caused Jackson?s delays in the Battles of the Seven Days? Who devised the flank march around Hooker at Chancellorsville? This book?s insights into Robert E. Lee and his military strategy and its close-up report on the Confederacy?s war qualify it as an indispensable part of America?s historical record.

Book Synopsis The Myth of the Lost Cause and Civil War History by : Gary W. Gallagher
Download or read book The Myth of the Lost Cause and Civil War History written by Gary W. Gallagher and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myth of the Lost Cause of the Confederate States in the Civil War was and is an elaborate and intentional effort on the part of southerners to rationalise the secession and the war itself. Unfortunately, for historical truth and the national memory, these skilful propagandists, beginning with Jubal Early, have been so successful that the Lost Cause has assumed a life of its own and continues to misrepresent what really happened, distorting the national memory in the process. In this book, nine historians analyse the Lost Cause, describing its content and identifying its falsity. The work is thus a major contribution to Civil War historiography.
