This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry, in the War Between the States The following narrative of the operations of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War was written by the late brigadier-general R. L. T. Beale, their old commander, in 1865. It was found among his papers at his death, on April 17, 1893, written upon the consecutive pages of a thin blank-book. It has been carefully copied, and arranged in chapters with headings to indicate their contents. As full and accurate a roster of the regiment as it has been possible to obtain has been added. It has been possible to secure only a very imperfect list of the casualties. If this record of the regiment had been commensu rate with the admiration and affection in which the author held its officers and men, it would have been far more extended than it is. Comparatively few of the veterans whose names appear on these pages now survive. The narrative will, however, interest their children, and, perhaps, many others who cherish the record of Southern devotion and valor, as displayed by the daring horsemen who wielded the sabre and followed the plumes of Stuart, Hampton, and the Lees. Book Synopsis We Were the Ninth by : Constantin Grebner
Download or read book We Were the Ninth written by Constantin Grebner and published by . This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Were The Ninth is a translation, carefully edited and thoroughly annotated, of an important Civil War regiment. The Ninth Ohio--composed of Ohio Germans mostly from Cincinnati--saw action at Rich Mountain and Carnifex Ferry in West Virginia, Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, Hoover's Gap, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga. The Ninth began the War amid misgivings (Would a German-speaking regiment in the Union Army cause chaos?) and ended its active service among the honored units. It continued as an active German-speaking veterans' organization. Constantin Grebner published this significant history, in German, in 1897 and noted that it "is intended as neither a history of the war nor a definitive account of battles. Rather, it is restricted to a straightÂforward, veracious report of what happened to The Ninth, and to recounting as accurately as possible The Ninth's experiences as a wartime regiment." Frederic Trautmann's English translation is faithful to Grebner's original text, preserving its integrity while maintaining its energy, precision, and grace.
Book Synopsis The Battle of Brandy Station by : Eric J Wittenberg
Download or read book The Battle of Brandy Station written by Eric J Wittenberg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Civil War history and guide examines a major turning point in cavalry combat and includes a GPS guided tour of the battlefield. Just before dawn on June 9, 1863, Union soldiers materialized from a thick fog near the banks of Virginia's Rappahannock River to ambush sleeping Confederates. The ensuing struggle, which lasted throughout the day, was to be known as the Battle of Brandy Station—the largest cavalry battle ever fought on North American soil. These events marked a major turning point in the Civil War: the waning era of Confederate cavalry dominance in the East gave way to a confident and powerful Union mounted arm. Historian Eric J. Wittenberg meticulously captures the drama and significance of these events in this fascinating volume. The GPS guided tour of the battlefield is supplemented with illustrations and maps by master cartographer Steven Stanley.

Download or read book A Texas Cavalry Officer's Civil War written by Richard Lowe and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volunteer officer with the 9th Texas Cavalry Regiment from 1861 to 1865, James Campbell Bates saw some of the most important and dramatic clashes in the Civil War's western and trans-Mississippi theaters. Bates rode thousands of miles, fighting in the Indian Territory; at Elkhorn Tavern in Arkansas; at Corinth, Holly Springs, and Jackson, Mississippi; at Thompson's Station, Tennessee; and at the crossing of the Etowah River during Sherman's Atlanta campaign. In a detailed diary and dozens of long letters to his family, he recorded his impressions, confirming the image of the Texas cavalrymen as a hard-riding bunch -- long on aggression and short on discipline. Bates's writings, which remain in the possession of his descendants, treat scholars to a documentary treasure trove and all readers to an enthralling, first-person dose of American history.
