This book was released on 2008-09-22 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighth book of the "Ecclesiastical History," Eusebius, Bishop of Cæsarea, stated his intention of writing, in a distinct treatise, a narrative of the confession of those Martyrs with whom he had himself been acquainted. Up to the time of the discovery of this Syriac copy no such work was known to exist in any separate form, either in Latin or Greek. Here Eusebius writes more than just the history of the martyrs of Christ, he writes of his contemporaries and mentors who suffered the act of martyrdom for the Christian faith.

Book Synopsis Christian Martyrdom in Late Antiquity (300-450 AD) by : Peter Gemeinhardt
Download or read book Christian Martyrdom in Late Antiquity (300-450 AD) written by Peter Gemeinhardt and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-07-04 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume’s focus lies on the formation of a multifaccetted discourse on Christian martyrdom in Late Antiquity. While martyrdom accounts remain a central means of defining Christian identity, new literary genres emerge, e.g., the Lives of Saints (Athanasius on Antony), sermons (the Cappadocians), hynms (Prudentius) and more. Authors like Eusebius of Caesarea and Augustine employ martyrological language and motifs in their apologetical and polemic writings, while the Gesta Martyrum Romanorum represent a new type of veneration of the martyrs of a single site. Beyond the borders of the Roman Empire, new martyrs’ narratives can be found. Additionally, two essays deal with methodological questions of research of such sources, thereby highlighting the hitherto understudied innovations of martyrology in Late Antiquity, that is, after the end of the persecutions of Christianity by Roman Emperors. Since then, martyrology gained new importance for the formation of Christian identity within the context of a Christianized imperium. The volume thus enlarges and specifies our knowledge of this fundamental Christian discourse.

Download or read book Cult of the Dead written by Kyle Smith and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-10 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural history of how Christianity was born from its martyrs. Though it promises eternal life, Christianity was forged in death. Christianity is built upon the legacies of the apostles and martyrs who chose to die rather than renounce the name of their lord. In this innovative cultural history, Kyle Smith shows how a devotion to death has shaped Christianity for two thousand years. For centuries, Christians have cared for their saints, curating their deaths as examples of holiness. Martyrs' stories, lurid legends of torture, have been told and retold, translated and rewritten. Martyrs' bones are alive in the world, relics pulsing with wonder. Martyrs' shrines are still visited by pilgrims, many in search of a miracle. Martyrs have even shaped the Christian conception of time, with each day of the year celebrating the death of a saint. From Roman antiquity to the present, by way of medieval England and the Protestant Reformation, Cult of the Dead tells the fascinating story of how the world's most widespread religion is steeped in the memory of its martyrs.

Book Synopsis Evidence of Greek Philosophical Concepts in the Writings of Ephrem the Syrian by : Ute Possekel
Download or read book Evidence of Greek Philosophical Concepts in the Writings of Ephrem the Syrian written by Ute Possekel and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ephrem the Syrian (d. 373) has often been taken to represent an unhellenized Semitic form of Christianity in unbroken continuity with the tradition of Jesus and the apostles. This somewhat romanticized view of Ephrem disregards the fact that Syria had been subject to Greek influence since its conquest centuries earlier by Alexander the Great. Ephrem's own writings however frequently betray a familiarity with Greek philosophical ideas. This book first introduces Ephrem's intellectual context and his attitude towards learning. It then systematically analyzes parallels between Ephrem and Greek writers on the subjects of atomism, space, on corporeals, vision, and the four elements. This study thereby demonstrates that Ephrem draws not only on Semitic cultural traditions, but also on Greek philosophical thought.
