Book Synopsis Aligarh Muslim University by : Mohammed Wajihuddin
Download or read book Aligarh Muslim University written by Mohammed Wajihuddin and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) completed a hundred years in December 2020. In December 1920, the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1877, was transformed into AMU. Sir Syed also established the All India Mohammedan Educational Conference to infuse the subcontinent's Muslims with a spirit of modernism. This helped prepare the community, devastated in the aftermath of the Revolt of 1857, for new challenges. This book examines the critical role that the Aligarh Muslim University played in the making of the modern Indian Muslim. As Zakir Hussain, AMU alumnus, its former Vice-Chancellor and a former President of India, said over fifty years ago, 'The way Aligarh participates in various walks of national life will determine the place of Muslims in India's national life. The way India conducts itself towards Aligarh will determine largely, the form which our national life will acquire in the future.'

Book Synopsis The Rays before Satyajit by : Chandak Sengoopta
Download or read book The Rays before Satyajit written by Chandak Sengoopta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of Indian cinema, the name of Satyajit Ray needs no introduction. However, what remains unvoiced is the contribution of his forebears and their tryst with Indian modernity. Be it in art, advertising, and printing technology or in nationalism, feminism, and cultural reform, the earlier Rays attempted to create forms of the modern that were uniquely Indian and cosmopolitan at the same time. Some of the Rays, especially Upendrakishore and his son, Sukumar, are iconic figures in Bengal. But even Bengali historiography is almost exclusively concerned with the family’s contributions to children’s literature. However, as this study highlights, the family also played an important role in engaging with new forms of cultural modernity. Apart from producing literary works of enduring significance, they engaged in diverse reformist endeavours. The first comprehensive work in English on the pre-Satyajit generations, The Rays before Satyajit is more than a collective biography of an extraordinary family. It interweaves the Ray saga with the larger history of Indian modernity.

Download or read book Turkey, Egypt, and Syria written by Shibli Numani and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey, Egypt, and Syria: A Travelogue vividly captures the experiences of prominent Indian intellectual and scholar Shibli Nu‘mani (1857–1914) as he journeyed across the Ottoman Empire and Egypt in 1892. A professor of Arabic and Persian at the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College at Aligarh, Nu‘mani took a six-month leave from teaching to travel to the Ottoman Empire in search of rare printed works and manuscripts to use as sources for a series of biographies on major figures in Islamic history. Along the way, he collected information on schools, curricula, publishers, and newspapers, presenting a unique portrait of imperial culture at a transformative moment in the history of the Middle East. Nu‘mani records sketches and anecdotes that offer rare glimpses of intellectual networks, religious festivals, visual and literary culture, and everyday life in the Ottoman Empire and Egypt. First published in 1894, the travelogue has since become a classic of Urdu travel writing and has been immensely influential in the intellectual and political history of South Asia. This translation, the first into English, includes contemporary reviews of the travelogue, letters written by the author during his travels, and serialized newspaper reports about the journey, and is deeply enriched for readers and students by the translator’s copious multilingual glosses and annotations. Nu‘mani's chronicle offers unique insight into broader processes of historical change in this part of the world while also providing a rare glimpse of intellectual engagement and exchange across the porous borders of empire.
Download or read book Gandhi written by B.R. Nanda and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-14 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hindu–Muslim conflict was a major problem during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. This book shows how Mahatma Gandhi resolved the conflict and even united the Hindus and the Muslims. It presents a detailed introduction to the Khilafat (Pan-Islamist) movement, a venture that Gandhi supported wholeheartedly. The discussion looks at Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement, which, he believed, could help bridge the gap between the two communities. It discusses concepts such as mass civil disobedience and the Caliphate, and studies notable events such as the brief alliance between the British Raj and the Indian Muslims and the Mappila Rebellion. It also takes note of the responses of the British officials towards Gandhi’s efforts and the confrontation that nearly occurred between the Viceroy and Gandhi. The book introduces readers to some of the people who participated and contributed to these events, including the Ali Brothers, Syed Ahmad Khan, and Ameer Ali.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Sikh Studies in Punjab History and Historiography had its roots in the British political and diplomatic interest about the Sikh military and social rise in North India by the close of the Eighteenth Century. John Malcolm and Charles T. Metcalfe dealt with the Sikh misaldars between 1803 and 1804 A.D. Like Murray, H.T. Prinsep wade under William Bentinck (1828-1835) took interest in Sikh political formations and the Khalsa traditions. J.D. Cunningham wrote his book entitled History of the Sikh in 1849. After this, The Asiatic Society of Bengal took some interest in Sikh literature by 1851 but it was confined only to the writings of Guru Gobind Singh or the folklore in the region. Hope this book shall meet this difficulty of ignorance.
