Through his Comprehensive and meticulous research, Coupled with his distinctive approach to church history and his articulate writing, he has pieced together, especially in the first six chapters, a story of the synod unmatched in contextual analysis. The fruits of his research also bring life to some of the later chapters, but, regrettably, he was unable to write those chapters because of the demands on his time when he became president of Newberry College. This author is indebted to Bost for his inspiration, but also to many other assisted in the completion of the final chapters during 1993-94. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lutheranism in America is a comprehensive history of the Lutheran church and the Lutheran people in the United States. This volume ... presents the historical facts and interprets the general course of events in such a way as to prevent the reader from losing the main thread in a mass of details. At the same time this work points the way toward advanced study. Beginning with the early Lutheran church in New Netherlands, the author shows the relationship between American culture and the Lutheran Church. He carefully presents the development of this church in the light of historical perspective, showing how the church and the nation were born in America at the same time, grew up side by side and developed by similar stages of progress. Dr. Wentz also shows how the Lutheran church in America is an integral and potent part of American Christianity, and its members a typical element of the American nation."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1962 Proceedings of the One Hundred and Fifty-Eighth Annual Convention of the United Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina of the United Lutheran Church in America Reliable history involves dates, facts and events. Significant dates in North Carolina Lutheranism, are 1743, 1773, 1803, 1863, 1918, 1921, and now, 1962. The first German immigrants began to arrive in North Carolina in 1743. By 1747, there were four Lutheran congregations organized in North Carolina; Friedens, Guilford County; St. John's and Zion (organ) in Rowan; and St. John's, in Cabarrus. Historian Conner esti mates that in 1771 there were Lutherans in North Carolina. Dr. W. T. Whitsett observes that, Contrary to the rule with certain other denominations, the Lutherans did not think it necessary to wait for regular ministers in order to begin their church work; they set up their church services upon arrival, and with their duly elected deacons and elders conducted regular religious worship. Gonse crated laymen sponsored these worship services for approximately thirty (30) years before ordained ministers were on the field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American religions constitute a diverse group of beliefs and practices that emerged from the African diaspora brought about by the Atlantic slave trade. Traditional religions that had informed the worldviews of Africans were transported to the shores of the Americas and transformed to make sense of new contexts and conditions. This book explores the survival of traditional religions and how African American religions have influenced and been shaped by American religious history. The text provides an overview of the central people, issues, and events in an account that considers Protestant denominations, Catholicism, Islam, Pentecostal churches, Voodoo, Conjure, Rastafarianism, and new religious movements such as Black Judaism, the Nation of Islam, and the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors. The book addresses contemporary controversies, including President Barack Obamas former pastor Jeremiah Wright, and it will be valuable to all students of African American religions, African American studies, sociology of religion, American religious history, the Black Church, and black theology.
