Book excerpt: "Wonderful…a thoughtful discussion of what made [the Greeks] so important, in their own time and in ours." —Natalie Haynes, Independent The ancient Greeks invented democracy, theater, rational science, and philosophy. They built the Parthenon and the Library of Alexandria. Yet this accomplished people never formed a single unified social or political identity. In Introducing the Ancient Greeks, acclaimed classics scholar Edith Hall offers a bold synthesis of the full 2,000 years of Hellenic history to show how the ancient Greeks were the right people, at the right time, to take up the baton of human progress. Hall portrays a uniquely rebellious, inquisitive, individualistic people whose ideas and creations continue to enthrall thinkers centuries after the Greek world was conquered by Rome. These are the Greeks as you’ve never seen them before.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Greek Literature To read and re-read the scanty remains now left to us of the Literature of Ancient Greece, is a pleasant and not a laborious task; nor is that task greatly increased by the inclusion of the 'Scholia' or ancient commentaries. But modern scholarship has been prolific in the making of books; and as regards this department of my subject, I must frankly accept the verdict passed by a German critic upon a historian of vastly wider erudition than mine, and confess that I 'stand helpless before the mass of my material.' To be more precise, I believe that in the domain of Epic, Lyric, and Tragic Poetry, I am fairly familiar with the researches of recent years; and I have endeavoured to read the more celebrated books on Prose and Comic control; but I hope that comparatively few articles of importance in the last twenty volumes of the Hermes, the Rheinisches Museum, the Philologus, and the English Classical Journals, have escaped my consideration. More than this I have but rarely attempted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Literature of Ancient Greece, Vol. 3 of 3 We must now return to Athens, which had been the chief seat and centre of Greek literature during the second or classical period of its development, but had now, in all respects but one, resigned the leadership to the city of the Ptolemies. While Alexandria was producing the series of learned poets, acute grammarians, polyglot scholars, and original discoverers in mathematics and inductive science, which we have discussed in the two preceding chapters, Athenian literature was represented only by a chronicler or two, by a transient activity of the comic muse, and by the successive or contemporaneous establishment of certain forms of mental and moral philosophy, founded on the various Socratic schools which have been already traced to their origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Literature of Ancient Greece, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Foundation of the Socratic Schools to the Taking of Constantinople by the Turks Being a Continuation of K. O. Müller's Work When K. O. Muller died in 1840, the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, for which I was translating the History of Greek Literature from the author's manuscript, commissioned me to complete the work, and a few pages of my continuation had been published, when the Society came to an end. From that time until rather less than three years ago, I heard no more of the book; but the present publishers, having become possessed of the copyright, have requested me to complete my original undertaking, and the following pages are the result. In thus accepting a task, perhaps the most laborious, in proportion to its extent, that I could have undertaken, I have been induced by two motives: first, a wish to fulfil an obligation to the public, and to perform a promised duty to the memory of a distinguished scholar; secondly, a conviction that this book, if completed with tolerable success, would furnish an maid to the classical student which has not been and is not likely to be superseded. With regard to the first of these motives, I am quite aware that there are many who feel a respect for the memory of K. O. Muller, and who wish that his last and not least important work should be completed according to his plan, and that among these there are some who are at least as competent as I can pretend to be to write a history of Greek literature. But, on the other hand, I have every reason to believe that the public announcement of the fact, that one of the translators had been appointed to continue the work by the Society, for which Müller himself was writing it, must have deterred his friends in Germany and England from attempting to perform the same good office. Book excerpt: Grote's History of Greece is one of the classic works of historical interpretation and scholarship. George Grote - banker, MP and a founder of London University - was the first historian to give a high value to the Greek creation of democracy, and this aspect of his work is closely relevant to current debates about democracy in our times. This abridgement of the original twelve volume work, which was made in the early years of the century and published by George Routledge and sons, is now available again and makes accessible the essential Grote. In a new and original introduction, based on the latest research into Grote and into Greek history, Paul Cartledge places Grote's history in its intellectual context, discusses its salient features and traces its subsequent reception over the past century and a half.
