Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Lackawanna Valley IN presenting to the public these Contributions, it seems proper to state that the collection of the embodied facts was more the result of the love possessed by the writer for such incidents and history, than the hope of either a pecuniary reward, or a literary reputation. Becoming familiar with a few features in the history of the Lackawanna Valley, the writer was induced, by the solicitations of his friends, to put them into a shape whereby their publication might possibly awaken an interest, or perhaps elicit new and more connected material from a region where nothing yet had been done in the way of gathering its local history. From the absence of a proper and continued record - from indistinct and often conflicting memories - and from the death of all who were familiar with its earliest settlement, it is very proba ble that events narrated are sometimes given in an imperfect, and eyen in an inaccurate manner. It would not be surprising if such was the fact; but the reader must bear in mind that not only the personal, but the general history recorded here was written while the author was engaged in a large practice, and harassed by all the continual anxieties occurring in one of the most exhausting and thankless professions in the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Directory of Newton and Ransom Townships, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania: Including a History of the Wyoming Valley, and a Brief History of Pennsylvania and Lackawanna County; Also Many Biographical Sketches One custom of the Indians is worthy of perpetuation by all civilized people. Each tribe, through their chiefs and aged sachems, care fully related to the children all the history and achievements of their-deceased ancestors, Every brave and warrior knew that his deeds of skill, endurance and valor would be carefully relat ed to his children and descendants as long as the tribe existed. The custom fostered a spirit of patriotism and loyalty which has been the marvel of civilized man. The printed page now takes the place of tra dition and camp fire lore of tribal geneology. This book is designed to present in accurate de tail and connected order the story of the fami lies and citizens of these townships from pioneer days to the present time. The hardships, self denials, ideals, ambitions and achievements of these people are worthy of the pages of a book to be owned and frequently perused by their descendants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wyoming Valley: Upper Waters of the Susquehanna, and the Lackawanna Coal-Region, Including Views of the Natural Scenery of Northern Pennsylvania, From the Indian Occupancy to the Year 1875 The chapters forming this volume were published in parts, and designed to cover the region embraced in the title from the Indian occupancy to the year 1875. The only merit it seeks to claim is that of a photographic view of the territory, the pioneer history in the perspective, - the grand industries, mammoth enterprises, and natural beauties in the foreground. It was the province of the pen merely to accompany the camera, serving to elaborate where obstacles cutoff the view, and to retouch incomplete points. The task has been an arduous one, and like Goethe's star without haste, but without rest, it has accomplished its mission, little deserving the profuse kindnesses which it has received from the local press. These favors came at an hour when they were peculiarly welcome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blind Brother: A Story of the Pennsylvania Coal Mines Up in the Lackawanna region a strike had been in progress for nearly two weeks. Efforts had been made by the strikers to persuade the miners down the valley to join them, but at first without success. Then a committee of one hundred came down to appeal and to intimidate. In squads of ten or more they visited the mines in the region, and, in the course of their journeyings, had come to the Dryden Slope. They had induced the miners to go out at all the workings they had thus far entered, and were no less successful here. It required persuasion, sometimes threats, sometimes, indeed, even blows, for the miners in Dryden Slope had no cause of complaint against their employers; they earned good wages, and were content.
