While a few were distinctively religious in their inception, form of organi zation, and methods of administration. All professed a stead fast devotion to high ethical principles, and sought to maintain a lofty standard of personal character and social righteousness, and all claimed to be inspired by a desire and purpose to benefit mankind in some definite, practical, effective way.
