Book excerpt: Winner of the James Beard Award for Best Beverage Book, Named "Best Drinks Book" by Wine & Spirits magazine, Faiveley International Wine Book of the Year, OIV Best Viticulture Book "A fantastic Christmas present for any wine geek, and one that will provide an endless source of fiendish questions for quiz-setters" —The Guardian An indispensable book for every wine lover, from some of the world's leading wine experts. Where do wine grapes come from and how are grape varieties related to one another? What is the historical background of each one? Where are they grown? What sort of wines do they make? Using cutting-edge DNA analysis and detailing almost 1,400 distinct grape varieties, as well as myriad correct (and incorrect) synonyms, this book examines grapes and wine as never before. Here is a complete, alphabetically presented profile of all grape varieties of relevance to the wine lover, charting the relationships between them and including unique and astounding family trees, their characteristics in the vineyard, and—most important—what the wines made from them taste like. Presented in a stunning design with eight-page gatefolds that reveal the family trees, and a rich variety of full-color illustrations from Viala and Vermorel's century-old classic ampelography, the text will deepen readers' understanding of grapes and wine with every page. Combining Jancis Robinson's worldview and nose for good writing and good wines with Julia Harding's research, expertise, and attention to detail plus Dr. Vouillamoz's unique level of scholarship, Wine Grapes offers essential and original information in greater depth and breadth than has ever been available before. This is a book for wine students, wine experts, and wine lovers everywhere.

Book excerpt: "After a short history of the unsuccessful attempts to grow foreign vines, the author describes the origin of and his personal experience with the native Isabella. His vineyard was in Brooklyn, N.Y., where the Isabella had been cultivated as early as 1816. For half a century this was the grape of choice in the Eastern States, eventually giving way to the Concord. Spooner gives a description of other useful native grapes and an informative summary of grape growing in vineyards from Nantucket Island to North Carolina"--Gabler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Grapevine was formed when a small group of pioneers settled together on the Grape Vine Prairie in the 1840s and 1850s. The first settlers came for the promise of land ownership and a better life, and the Grape Vine Springs and rich soil yielded good harvests and subsequent prosperity. When the Cotton Belt Railroad arrived in 1888, it helped establish the town as a permanent agricultural trade center servicing the entire region. The Civil War and World Wars I and II interrupted the towns normal activities, but the citizens rallied in support of their state and country. Two major construction projects in the 1950s and 1960s transformed the future of Grapevine: the Grapevine Dam and Reservoir and the DallasFort Worth International Airport. In the 1970s, local historians realized the wealth within the citys past, and leaders took steps to protect and preserve it so that today people from all over the world come to see this quaint little prairie town.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grape Vine, Vol. 2: Its Culture, Uses, and History Under this head may be considered not only the modes Of cultivating the grape vine in the same house with flowering plants, but also its cultivation in a vinery by itself, with a similar employment Of heat only sufficient to exclude frost and other low tempe ratures at certain periods Of the vine's growth. These periods are chiefly in early spring, when the occur rence Of night frosts and easterly winds endanger the Opening buds-wand late in autumn, when cold damp weather may render a little artificial heat desirable, either to promote the ripening Of the wood, or pre serve from mouldiness the ripened fruit. With regard to training, pruning, and thinning, in the greenhouse, they are fundamentally the same as in the stove (see next section), but with especial care on these points l. TO train the vines to the rafters or otherwise, so that they shall not overshadow the interior before the end Of May. 2. TO empty the greenhouse of all greenhouse plants after that period.
