Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus spoke one lawman about John Wesley Hardin, easily the most feared and fearless of all the gunfighters in the West. Nobody knows the exact number of his victims-perhaps as few as twenty or as many as fifty. In his way of thinking, Hardin never shot a man who did not deserve it. Seeking to gain insight into Hardin’s homicidal mind, Leon Metz describes how Hardin’s bloody career began in post-Civil War Central Texas, when lawlessness and killings were commonplace, and traces his life of violence until his capture and imprisonment in 1878. After numerous unsuccessful escape attempts, Hardin settled down and received a pardon years later in 1895. He wrote an autobiography but did not live to see it published. Within a few months of his release, John Selman gunned him down in an El Paso saloon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterpiece of research, a splendid supplement to Ezra J. Warner's Generals in Gray, Bruce S. Allardice brings to light a neglected class of officers: the Confederacy's "other" generals -- men who attained their rank outside the usual avenue of appointment by President Jefferson Davis and who had been virtually forgotten as a consequence. Explaining that the process of becoming a general was fraught with politics, lobbying, intrigue, accident, mismanagement, and chance, Allardice identifies six main categories of legitimate claimants to the rank of Confederate General -- two more than historians have traditionally recognized. He presents a substantial biographical sketch of 137 generals not found in Warner's original and a short bibliography of each. For the vast majority, his is the first treatment ever published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the flags of Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the United States successively flew over San Antonio, its Tejano community (Texans of Spanish or Mexican descent) formed a distinct ethnic identity that persisted despite rapid social and cultural changes. In this pioneering study, Timothy Matovina explores the central role of Tejano Catholicism in forging this unique identity and in binding the community together. The first book-length treatment of the historical role of religion in a Mexican-origin community in the United States, this study covers three distinct periods in the emergence of Tejano religious and ethnic identity: the Mexican period (1821-1836), the Texas Republic (1836-1845), and the first decade and a half after annexation into the United States (1845-1860). Matovina's research demonstrates how theories of unilateral assimilation are inadequate for understanding the Tejano community, especially in comparison with the experiences of European immigrants to the United States. As residents of the southwestern United States continue to sort out the legacy of U.S. territorial expansion in the nineteenth century, studies like this one offer crucial understanding of the survival and resilience of Latino cultures in the United States. Tejano Religion and Ethnicity will be of interest to a broad popular and scholarly audience.

Book excerpt: In the years between the Civil War and World War I, a raw and vibrant city was forged out of the Texas blackland prairie by Eastern promoters and local opportunists; a city of opulent Victorian Gothic mansions, of elaborate cast-iron commercial emporiums, and of sharecropper shanties where the poor struggled to survive. This city, its monuments and ideology, have today almost totally vanished, replaced by a modern metropolis of reflective glass and abstractionist concrete.????Dallas Rediscovered examines this city in all its turn of the century splendor through hundreds of period photographs expertly reproduced by a duotone printing process, complemented by a lively and informative text.

Book excerpt: Historical interpretations shape a culture's understanding of itself, its challenges, its options. New conditions within society, along with new information and methods available to historians, should call forth new interpretations of the past. Thus history changes as time passes. Yet Texas historians have had trouble discarding old understandings. The contributors to this volume of Texas historiography explore this key question: Why have historians not subjected the myths of the state to rigorous, ongoing examination? Why does the macho myth of Anglo Texas still reign? This book is the first scholarly attempt to place the intellectual development of Texas history within the framework of current trends in the study of U.S. history. Twelve eminent scholars have contributed evaluations of the historical literature in their respective fields of expertise--from Texas-Mexican culture and African-American roles to agrarianism, progressivism, and the New Deal; from perspectives on women to the urban experience of Sunbelt boom and near-bust. The cumulative effort describes and analyzes what Texas history is and how it got that way. These stimulating critiques challenge the field to produce a new synthesis that moves away from the provincialism that has so often limited the intellectual directions of the state's historians and the actions of its political leaders.
