Book excerpt: This essay critically examines the arguments advanced in support of Tamil separatist claims for the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka and part of the North-Western Province, a region that the Tamils refer to as their "traditional homelands". The author is a historian and Executive Director of the International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Sri Lanka. The evolution of the concept of Tamil traditional homelands is traced and the validity of the historical references the separatists use to legitimise their claims are evaluated. The author sees these claims as a contemporary example of the development of a political myth, where myth is taken to mean a tale told to justify some aspect of social order, based on a particular interpretation of facts already present in the culture. The final part of the essay looks at the debate about the homelands during the years 1985-1994, a period which closes with Sinhalese political opinion insisting that the current amalgamation of the Northern and Eastern Provinces be undone. Comparisons are made with other separatist claims in Asia, such as those of the Moros in the Philippines.

It gives shape to his long held, though often controversial views that the Sinhalese and Tamils of Sri Lanka are descended from common ancestors who lived in the country in prehistoric and protohistoric times and have a shared history going back to over two thousand years. He argues that through a process of language replacement the north Indian Prakrit dialects spread among the vast majority of the people paving the way for the evolution of Sinhalese while Tamil became the dominant language in some parts of the island leading to the emergence of Sri Lankan Tamil. Buddhism, though at first common to both groups later became a religion associated with the Sinhalese. The rule of the Cola dynasty in the 11th century paved the way for the rise of Saivism among the Tamils. In the end Buddhism disappeared completely as a religion of the Sri Lankan Tamils and Saivism assumed dominance among them. The result was that religion in addition to language became a marker of ethnic identity. This research covers the period up to 1200 by which time the process of evolution had more or less stabilized and the chance of one absorbing the other eventually had receded, although assimilation of elements of one group into the other continued.

However, hostilities resumed with ever increasing desperation and ferocity on both sides, until the LTTE were overcome and largely eradicated in 2009. This book provides a contextualised analysis of the effects of war on a small Tamil community living in northern Sri Lanka during the cease-fire period. It examines how the society changed and adapted in order to accommodate the upheaval and destruction of war, and its inevitable resumption. In particular, it focuses on the nature of suffering through an exploration of a well-known ritual: Thuukkukkaavadi that transformed the experience of pain and suffering and contributed to a process whereby many village communities could come together in a demonstration of strength and resilience. It contributes to studies on violence, reparation processes of so-called ‘post-conflict’ societies and the medical anthropology of healing. It questions assumptions concerning the nature of suffering and critiques the application of western categories in settings like northern Sri Lanka, where entire communities have been silenced by political violence.
