The earliest public places of meeting were a hall-shop (tie, a hall over a shop) on old Fifth Avenue, and a similar room on Second Avenue, said to have been a school - room over a harness shop. In 1 8 19, dur ing l\ir. N ewcomb's pastorate, the church conducted a bible school. The first meeting house owned by the church was at the corner of Third Avenue and Grant Street, on a leased lot. The building was a one - story frame about thirty by forty feet. This was built in 1 820 during the ministry of John Davis, who came from England and was of repute as an evangelist, and who baptized sixty-two persons, bringing the membership to one hundred six. While this meeting house was building the church met in the home of deacon John P. Skelton on the south side of the lwonongahel-a.
