George settled in Dedham, Massachusetts, where he married in 1642, Elizabeth Clarke, another English immigrant to the "colonies". To George and Eliza- beth were born eight children. Thus began the American line of the Barbers that would in 1823, five generations later, migrate by oxen-drawn wagon from Massachusetts to China Township (now the Town of Java) in the "wilds" of western New York.History of the Barbers of Java, New York describes the Barber five-generation line of descent from the immigrant generation to the generation that migrated to Java, New York. It also describes the Java Barber descendancy along the male line down to the present generations. Latter generations include the author's recollections as he grew up among the Java Barbers, and numerous family traditions passed down through the generations.Genealogical descriptions use the traditional Registry presentation format adopted by the NewEngland Historic and Genealogical Society (NEHGS).An early map and brief history of Java Village, located within the Town of Java, includes a chrono- logical history that identifies early settlers and businesses in the area.Author Ray Barber is an elev- enth-generation descendant of the American Barber line, and the Town of Java Historian.Photographs of selected family members are included. A compre- hensive bibliography and all-name and all-place indexes complete the work.
