Book excerpt: The sixty years covered by this wide-ranging unit history encompassed the high noon and final sunset of both the British Army's proud cavalry arm and the Indian army of which the 19th Lancers were such an ornament. The 19th Lancers were raised in India in 1858 in the aftermath of the Great Mutiny. In the 1870s it fought in the second Afghan war; was on garrison duty in India in the 1880s; served on the ever-restive North West Frontier in the 1890s. With the outbreak of the Great War, the regiment was rushed to France, where, after the formation of the trench lines, it fought as infantry - including the battle of the Somme in 1916. In 1917 it fought at Arras and Cambrai, and ended the war in Egypt and Palestine where it took part in the advance on Damascus. This is a valuable and rare official account of an Indian regiment in the Great War, and is laced with vivid vignettes of the Indian army's social life in peace and war. There are photos and maps and numerous appendices; awards; and Rolls of Honour.

Book Synopsis Legacy of the Somme 1916 by : Gerald Gliddon
Download or read book Legacy of the Somme 1916 written by Gerald Gliddon and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of the Somme is widely regarded as one of the bloodiest and most controversial land battles ever fought. The first British troops went over the top on 1 July 1916 and by the day's end some 19,000 had been killed in the greatest one-day loss the British Army has ever known. This notoriety has ensured that the Somme and its many fallen warriors live on in countless books, plays and films. Documentary sources about the Somme abound and there is a voracious appetite among the book-buying public for more. Legacy of the Somme 1916 is a unique bibliographical and media guide to the battle, setting on record - in as comprehensive a listing as is possible - much of what has been written, filmed or sound-recorded in the English language between 1916 and 1995. This detailed listing includes official, unofficial and unit histories of the British and Commonwealth armies; biographies, autobiographies and memoirs; literature, drama and media; archives, tanks and war graves registers. Short commentaries accompany each entry and a detailed index enables accurate cross-referencing of subjects. First and foremost this is a unique work of reference which will appeal to all with an interest in the First World War. It will aid historians, researchers and enthusiasts to track down the vast amount of information available on the battle, and will also prove valuable to libraries, museums and the book trade.

Download or read book Fighting Nature written by Peta Tait and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 19th century animals were integrated into staged scenarios of confrontation, ranging from lion acts in small cages to large-scale re-enactments of war. Initially presenting a handful of exotic animals, travelling menageries grew to contain multiple species in their thousands. These 19th-century menageries entrenched beliefs about the human right to exploit nature through war-like practices against other animal species. Animal shows became a stimulus for antisocial behaviour as locals taunted animals, caused fights, and even turned into violent mobs. Human societal problems were difficult to separate from issues of cruelty to animals. Apart from reflecting human capacity for fighting and aggression, and the belief in human dominance over nature, these animal performances also echoed cultural fascination with conflict, war and colonial expansion, as the grand spectacles of imperial power reinforced state authority and enhanced public displays of nationhood and nationalistic evocations of colonial empires. Fighting nature is an insightful analysis of the historical legacy of 19th-century colonialism, war, animal acquisition and transportation. This legacy of entrenched beliefs about the human right to exploit other animal species is yet to be defeated. "Peta Tait brings to the book an impressive scholarly command of the documentary material, from which she draws a range of vivid examples and revealing analyses of human–animal confrontation in popular entertainments ... The book is written with verve and clarity, and will be of interest to a wide readership in performance studies and cultural history." Professor Jane R. Goodall, Western Sydney University Peta Tait FAHA is Professor of Theatre and Drama at La Trobe University and Visiting Professor at the University of Wollongong, and author of Wild and dangerous performances: animals, emotions, circus (2012).
Download or read book South St. Paul written by Lois A. Glewwe and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated in 1887, South St. Paul grew rapidly as the blue-collar counterpart to the bright lights and sophistication of its cosmopolitan neighbors Minneapolis and St. Paul. Its prosperous stockyards and slaughterhouses ranked the city among America's largest meatpacking centers. The proud city fell on hard economic times in the second half of the twentieth century. Broad swaths of empty buildings were razed as an enticement to promised redevelopment programs that never happened. In 1990, South St. Paul began to chart out its own successful path to renewal with a pristine riverfront park, a trail system and a business park where the stockyards once stood. Author and historian Lois A. Glewwe brings the story of the city's revival to life in this history of a remarkable community.

Book Synopsis Bougainville before the conflict by : Anthony J Regan
Download or read book Bougainville before the conflict written by Anthony J Regan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most beautiful island groups of the Pacific, Bougainville has a remarkable history. Tragically, it is as the site of devastating civil conflict that Bougainville is perhaps best known. In exploring the rich environmental, cultural and social heritage of Bougainville before the conflict, this collection provides an insight into the long-term causes of the crisis. In doing so, it surveys such topics as Bougainville’s prehistory and traditional cultures, the impact of German and Australian colonialism, the attempts by disparate local cultures to find a common identity, the assertion of political autonomy in the face of coercion to integrate with Papua New Guinea, and contemporary efforts to resolve conflict and plan a viable future. A landmark collaboration between expert commentators on Bougainville and Bougainvilleans themselves, this volume provides a comprehensive picture for those seeking to understand Bougainville’s history and future directions. Bougainville before the conflict was published in association with the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Project, which is supported by The Australian National University and the Commonwealth of Australia.
Book Synopsis Irish Regiments in the Great War by : Timothy Bowman
Download or read book Irish Regiments in the Great War written by Timothy Bowman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British army was almost unique among the European armies of the Great War in that it did not suffer from a serious breakdown of discipline or collapse of morale. It did, however, inevitably suffer from disciplinary problems. While attention has hitherto focused on the 312 notorious "shot at dawn" cases, many thousands of British soldiers were tried by court martial during the Great War. This book will be essential reading for military and Irish historians and their students, and will interest any general reader concerned with how units maintain discipline and morale under the most trying conditions.
