Excerpt: ...hit, one of whom I remember was Michael Fitzjames, whose hand was badly torn by a bullet, causing him excruciating pain. Just before dark heavy firing to our right indicated trouble over there, and in a very short time, Colonel Duffy rode up and ordered us to move to the right and restore our lines, which had been broken. The firing in that direction was pretty well maintained, showing that the enemy was meeting with steady resistance. Colonel Olcott was at the head of the regiment and we hurried along moving by the right flank in column of fours. I do not know how far we went, but it was not a great distance when we came in contact with the enemy. They seemed to be coming from the direction in which we were going. I thought there were some of our troops in front of us, but instead we ran slam bang into the enemy. They ran over some of our fellows, and I fired into them. A bunch of them ordered us to surrender and fired a volley into us, which hit a number among whom were Dennis A Dewey, John H. Reynolds, and Wm. MacElroy. They immediately advanced and ordered us to surrender and go to their rear. There was a general scattering. Some of our fellows stopped to take care of the wounded, and it seemed to me that some more of our fellows were coming up behind. The Rebels seemed to be in a hurry to get back and hurried us up. It was now quite dusky and you could not tell a man's uniform a little ways off. I ran a short distance in the direction the Rebs wanted me to go, expecting every instant a volley from one of our regiments. Finally some one, a Rebel officer I suppose, said, 'Throw down that gun.' I had it in my hands and dropped it. I went only a little distance farther and threw myself down on my face. I expected to be punched every...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Regiment: A Record of the Military Services of the Fifty-Seventh New York State Volunteer Infantry in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 The Civil war really began forty years before the Clash of arms was heard. War or peaceable separation had become inevitable as far back as the twenties. The North was becoming rich through commerce and the South through cotton. The conscience of the North, not largely warped by the material gains of Slavery could see more clearly the wickedness of the institution, and the abolition sentiment steadily grew until the election of Abraham Lincoln revealed it in such proportions as to convince the world that it had come to stav. The South, on the other hand, finding slavery profitable insisted upon its extension to new territory, and was imperious in its demands that the authorities of the North should use the machinery of state governments for the return of runaway slaves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The "Dutchess County Regiment" (150th Regiment of New York State Volunteer Infantry) In the Civil War: Its Story as Told by Its Members, Based Upon the Writings of Rev. Edward O. Bartlett, D.D The surviving members of the Dutchess County Regi ment have always desired to have a Regimental History written. The subject came up at the first reunion in 1865, and at nearly every subsequent reunion since. It was generally concluded that Major Smith (i like to call him Major) was the proper person to Write it, as it was believed that he had more data upon which to base the history of the regiment than any other member of it. It is also generally believed that he did write said history, but that his sudden and untimely death robbed us of his very valuable manuscripts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Two Hundred and Third Regiment: New York Infantry Volunteers In the following pages there is a record of the Two Hundred and Third Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, which tells the story of its organization, its service, and its muster out, facts of interest of those who served with the regiment, and important as part of the military history of the State and of the War. The 203rd had the trying experience of continuous camp life, unbroken by the interest and excitement of active campaigning. The one thing which the American Volunteer wants to do when he gets a gun in his hands, is to fight, and this spirit often resents the delays which are absolutely necessary to prepare a force for its most important work. It is doubtful if a regiment's discipline - that cornerstone of soldierly merit - could be put to a severer test than spending a year in camp, while other regiments are at the front. Digging sinks and ditches, policing camp, burning refuse, even drilling and marching, important as they all are, do not realize the young soldier's idea of war, to say nothing of his dream of glory. It is no light praise to say that the officers and men of the 203d, through the long and sometimes tedious months, worked honestly and persistently, and doggedly, when not cheerfully, to bring the regiment up to the high standards of the United States service. All cherished until the last a hope that they would see some active service, and until the last all strove to make the regiment so efficient that it could perform with credit any duty to which it might be assigned. In its Colonel the regiment had an able officer, who brought to it the best spirit of the army, and the officers as a body did their work faithfully in perfecting the regiment and in caring for the men. Infantry: On the Battlefield of Gettysburg, October 3, 1888 In June, 1886, when the 111th, and 126th regiments, N. Y. volunteers, united in an excursion to the Battlefield of Gettysburg, the wish was expressed that within two or three years they might again visit the place for the purpose of erecting monuments in honor of their respective regiments. The excursion of the 126th regiment on the 1st of October was the realization in part of such wish. The excursion left Canandaigua at 8:30 o'clock Monday evening, October 1st, 1888, by a special train. Owing to the extreme inclemency of the weather, the number of persons was comparatively small, only about sixty uniting in the excursion. The run from Canandaigua was made without delay, accident, or special incident, the train arriving at Gettysburg at half-past six Tuesday morning. Breakfast was soon in readiness, to which the party did ample justice. Everything had been most thoughtfully and elaborately arranged for the comfort of the excursionists and to aid them in seeing the most in the shortest possible time. At eight o'clock Mr. Ziegler's carriages were at the door of the hotel, and in charge of the well-known battlefield lecturer, Capt. James T. Long, of Gettysburg, the party was soon on its way to view the battlefield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
