Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Texas, Vol. 2 of 2: From Its First Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846 In the compilation of this volume, the materials were so abundant, that the great difficulty was, to select the most prominent and connected facts, so as not to make the volume too ponderous, nor to break the unity of the story. In all this you will doubtless find errors, but - I have done the best I could, and hope you may find it sufficiently interesting to pe ruse it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Texas, Vol. 2 of 5: From Wilderness to Commonwealth That it was the intention Of Alamen that this pro vision should stop American immigration altogether, there can be little doubt. But in practice American immigration continued. In the first place, it was not difficult to cross the border without being Observed, and many Americans came into Texas at points remote from those guarded by Mexican troops. But, in addition to this, Austin took the position that the law did not apply to immigration to his colony, and the Mexican officials, faced with the peculiar difficulties which would arise from any attempt to interfere with Austin's contracts, agreed to this interpretation. It was Austin's policy at all times to Obtain his ends with the least friction, and while he would not have supinely submitted to an out-and-out cancellation of his contracts, which would have resulted in great loss to him, Instead of registering a protest, he smilingly assumed that the Mexicans had no intention Of interfering with him; and the authori ties On their part smilingly assured him that such was the case. But it was necessary that there should be an appearance of legality, and Austin's colonists would have to be introduced in accordance with the law. SO an arrangement was worked out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas, Vol. 1 of 2: The Rise, Progress, and Prospects of the Republic of Texas The 'complete Map of the Republic of Texas has been compiled from the best published authorities, including the maps of Stephen Austin, Mitchell (philadelphia), and surveys made under the sanction of the Texan Government. To these is to be added Le Grand's original survey, of the precise date of which, owing to a manuscript omission, I am not certain, - the point is trifling, but the survey must have been made in 1830 or 1831. To the zeal and skill of Mr. Arrowsmith I am materially in debted for a map which, without pretending to ah solute accuracy, is a great improvement upon all preceding ones, and will serve every practical pur pose of the politician and emigrant. The necessity of correcting the sheets of this work at a considerable distance from London, has delayed its appearance beyond the anticipated period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a valuable contribution to general history, and especially to the history of the Uniteed States. The past of Texas is here brought down and covers a period of 161 years—the greatest prominence being given to the first half of the 19th century. Several familiar names figure in the work, respecting whom, in connection with Texas, the reader will naturally desire to learn what is here told. This is one of the most authentic and valuable books, in connection with the general affairs of Texas, that can be found; in which nothing is stated upon individual responsibility—everything in it is sustained by the official documents. This is volume two out of two.
