Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a valuable contribution to general history, and especially to the history of the Uniteed States. The past of Texas is here brought down and covers a period of 161 years—the greatest prominence being given to the first half of the 19th century. Several familiar names figure in the work, respecting whom, in connection with Texas, the reader will naturally desire to learn what is here told. This is one of the most authentic and valuable books, in connection with the general affairs of Texas, that can be found; in which nothing is stated upon individual responsibility—everything in it is sustained by the official documents. This is volume two out of two.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Texas, Vol. 2 of 2: From Its First Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846 In the compilation of this volume, the materials were so abundant, that the great difficulty was, to select the most prominent and connected facts, so as not to make the volume too ponderous, nor to break the unity of the story. In all this you will doubtless find errors, but - I have done the best I could, and hope you may find it sufficiently interesting to pe ruse it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Facsimile Reproduction in One Volume of History of Texas From Its Fist Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846, Vol. 1 of 2: With an Extended Appendix Texas is an alluvial country, having very little rock on Its surface. Everywhere is to be found unmistakeable evidence of its having been submerged. In the extreme northern part primitive rocks may be found, though in the inhabited portion they are never seen. The variety of her latitude and eleva tion gives to her citizens a like variety of climate and produc tions. In the south, they grow oranges and sugar-cane; in the middle region, cotton; farther north, wheat; and potatoes, corn, and vegetables, everywhere. In fact, there is no coun try of like extent where a greater variety and quantity of agricultural productions can be raised; nor is there any coun try where the laborer can find a more certain and better re ward for his toil. Circumstances alone have postponed to these latter days the development of the vast resources of Texas. Galveston, her principal harbor - situated about four hundred miles from New Orleans, seven hundred from Vera Cruz, and eight hun dred from Cuba - affords her a commercial outlet sufficient for her growing purposes. When her interior shall be sup plied with railroad facilities - and in no country can they be more cheaply built - she will have nothing further to desire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denton County and the City of Denton are named for pioneer preacher, lawyer, and Indian fighter John B. Denton, but little has been known about him. In this extensive, in-depth look into the life and death of Denton, Mike Cochran has made use of new materials not available to previous biographers to help bring the story to life. John B. Denton was an orphan in frontier Arkansas who became a circuit-riding Methodist preacher and an important member of a movement of early settlers bringing civilization to North Texas. He was a participant in the first missionary effort to bring Methodism to Texas, answering a call from William B. Travis to bring Methodists to the new republic. Denton then became a ranger on the frontier, ultimately being killed in the Tarrant Expedition, a Texas Ranger raid on a series of villages inhabited by various Caddoan and other tribes near Village Creek on May 24, 1841. He was leading a small raiding party that had separated from the larger group led by General Edward Tarrant when he was shot by native defenders. Denton’s true story has been lost or obscured by the persistent mythologizing by publicists for Texas, especially by pulp western writer, Alfred W. Arrington, and by the self-aggrandizing stories told by members of the Tarrant raiding party. His death came at a time when entrepreneurs were trying to attract Anglo settlers to the Republic of Texas and were especially apt to glorify the early settlers. Denton was further made a martyr of the church by Methodist historians. Cochran separates the truth from the myth in this meticulous biography, which also contains a detailed discussion of the controversy surrounding the burial of John B. Denton and offers some alternative scenarios for what happened to his body after his death on the frontier. This is the definitive, fact-based biography of John B. Denton.
