Book excerpt: Norton Parker Chipman is best known for successfully prosecuting Henry Wirz, the infamous commander of the Confederacy's Andersonville Prison where more than 13,000 Union soldiers died during the American Civil War. A Union officer, Chipman participated in many important events during and after the Civil War. He accompanied President Lincoln to Gettysburg and worked directly with Secretary of War Stanton. Later, he represented the District of Columbia as its delegate to Congress, led the fund-raising to complete the Washington Monument and wrote the order creating Memorial Day. He rose to prominence in California's burgeoning agribusiness and served many years as a state Supreme Court commissioner and a Court of Appeal presiding justice. This biography provides intimate accounts of a wounded combat officer's perspective of the Civil War, a Washington insider's view of the postwar capital and a veteran's influence in shaping and developing California.

Download or read book The Dakota War written by Micheal Clodfelter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States fought the Civil War in the early 1860s, the country's western frontier was simultaneously the site of significant military campaigns that took the lives of both American and Sioux. The Dakota campaign, led by Commander Henry Hastings Sibley and Brigadier General Alfred Sully against the Sioux between 1863 and 1864 was greater in scope, intensity and bloodshed than almost all other Indian battles fought in the West but is often overlooked. The Minnesota War of 1862 and the Dakota War of 1863-1865 were among the most significant U.S. victories in the Indian wars, but did not temper the passions of the Sioux to preserve their people and land or the desires of the whites to settle the frontier. The wars only incited the Teton Sioux to enter into a long-term resistance that would end only at Wounded Knee in 1890.

Book Synopsis History of the 33d Iowa Infantry Volunteer Regiment, 1863-6 by : Andrew F. Sperry
Download or read book History of the 33d Iowa Infantry Volunteer Regiment, 1863-6 written by Andrew F. Sperry and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the regiment's fife and drum major responsible for sounding the duty calls that regulated a soldier's day, Sperry was well situated to observe the inner workings of his unit. His perceptive narrative of army life on the march and in camp captures the courage, humor, and sufferings of the rank and file. Although he took pride in his regiment's accomplishments, he unflinchingly reveals the hard side of war with vivid depictions of looting, resistance to orders, and "extermination" of Confederate guerrillas." "Sperry's memoir is made more valuable by the new introduction and detailed notes from the editors. Their meticulous annotations include quotes from the diaries, letters, and reminiscences of other soldiers, adding depth and detail to the account."--Jacket.
