Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Southland College This booklet is intended to give Friends a better knowledge of the notable work done by members of Indiana Yearly Meeting, of the religions society of The Friends at the close of the late civil war in behalf of the wives and children of the Freedmen. The record presented in these pages shows that the Friends have ever been the friend of the lowly and oppressed, regardless of race or color. The work done at Southland from its inception to the present time has not been devoid of excellent fruit in the line of character-building, and righteousness; for from out its walls hundreds have gone with the message of helpfulness, and life to others, having learned the same within its walls by right living and faith in Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southland, 1928, Vol. 6: Southern Junior College, Ooltewah, Tennessee The example of the Carpenter of Nazareth has dignified for all time the manual trades. Ln elevating the conception of mankind concerning the dignity of labor, he set also a standard of diligent and persevering application to routine duties. The measure to which a school develops in a student the capacity for intelligent self direction, will determine the effectiveness of the training which has been imparted. While the disciplinary value of strictly intellectual activities is not to be overlooked, it should be observed that manual labor carries with it a training in initiative and dependability, and has a disciplinary value that can be obtained in no other way. Here again the Christian College may catch a vision of its mission through the study of the life and ideals of the Master Teacher. Fl Southern Junior College occupies a place, singular, in the field of Education. Of its rural location the book makes mention, it is trusted, in a convincing manner: every Department feels this influence. R No distinction of precedence is made at the College, nor in these pages, between the literary and scientific arts, and the manual and industrial crafts: neither is aug mented nor diminished in their mingling. 'j The desire of the Staff is that the: southland may appeal not only in artistic design, but also in truthfulness of presentation; that it may convince to action in young and old, - that it may prove a blessing to the cause to which it is dedicated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1864 Alida and Calvin Clark, two abolitionist members of the Religious Society of Friends from Indiana, went on a mission trip to Helena, Arkansas. The Clarks had come to render temporary relief to displaced war orphans but instead found a lifelong calling. During their time in Arkansas, they started the school that became Southland College, which was the first institution of higher education for blacks west of the Mississippi, and they set up the first predominately black monthly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in North America. Their progressive racial vision was continued by a succession of midwestern Quakers willing to endure the primitive conditions and social isolation of their work and to overcome the persistent challenges of economic adversity, social strife, and natural disaster. Southland’s survival through six difficult and sometimes dangerous decades reflects both the continuing missionary zeal of the Clarks and their successors as well as the dedication of the black Arkansans who sought dignity and hope at a time when these were rare commodities for African Americans in Arkansas.

Book excerpt: Nina Revoyr brings us a compelling story of race, love, murder, and history against the backdrop of Los Angeles. —Winner of a 2004 American Library Association Stonewall Honor Award in Literature —Winner of the 2003 Lambda Literary Award —Nominated for an Edgar Award The plot line of Southland is the stuff of a James Ellroy or a Walter Mosley novel . . . But the climax fairly glows with the good-heartedness that Revoyr displays from the very first page. —Los Angeles Times Jackie Ishida’s grandfather had a store in Watts where four boys were killed during the riots in 1965, a mystery she attempts to solve. —New York Times Book Review, included in “Where Noir Lives in the City of Angels” Nina Revoyr brings us a compelling story of race, love, murder, and history against the backdrop of Los Angeles. A young Japanese-American woman, Jackie Ishida, is in her last semester of law school when her grandfather, Frank Sakai, dies unexpectedly. While trying to fulfill a request from his will, Jackie discovers that four black teenagers were killed in the store he ran during the Watts Riots of 1965—and that the murders were never solved or reported. Along with James Lanier, a cousin of one of the victims, she tries to piece together the story of the boys’ deaths. In the process, Jackie unearths the long-held secrets of her family’s history—and her own. Moving in and out of the past, from the shipping yards and internment camps of World War II; to the barley fields of the Crenshaw District in the 1930s; to the means streets of Watts in the 1960s; to the night spots and garment factories of the 1990s, Southland weaves a tale of Los Angeles in all of its faces and forms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Higher Education in South Carolina: With a Sketch of the Free School System The College of Charleston, while its foundation can be traced to the legislative act of 1785, has given collegiate instruction only since the first quarter of the present century. It is supported very largely by income from vested funds, the result of endowment by public-spirited citizens in and near Charleston. Over half the three hundred thousand dollars endowment was given by Mr. Baynard, during the War, in 1864. The attendance has not been large, but the training in mathematics and ancient languages has always been thorough. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the South Carolina College: From Its Incorporation December 19, 1801, to Nov, 25, 1857, Including Sketches of Its Presidents and Professors With an Appendix The reader will observe that my sketches are introduced at the time when the several officers left the service of the College. I might have grouped them together, but I pre ferred the former order, because, among other reasons, it breaks the monotony of historical narrative, and furnishes an agreeable episode. It would have given me great pleasure to have embraced in my sketches the Tutors of the College; but this was not practicable. Many of them held their offices for a short period, and are now either dead or in dis tant lands, and it was not possible to procure material for such a purpose. Could it have been done, it would have added no little to the interest of the work, as many of them were men of talent and high attainments, and rendered a really valuable service. I have therefore, with a single exception, restricted myself to those who had entire charge of a department of instruction, or who at some period of their. Connection became members of the Faculty.
