When the question came to be argued before the commissioners appointed to decide the location of the new buildings, the advocate of Court-House Hill, Samuel De Forest, made an able effort to retain the honors and emoluments of the county-seat; but the efforts of Judge Cook, of Ballston Spa, Thomas C. Taylor and Nicholas Low, of New York, aided by the liberal ofl'ers of the latter, prevailed, and Court-House Hi_ll retained its name secured in the early times, --but the name only. The court-house stood on the west side of the road, opposite the large dwelling-house, formerly a tavern, now owned by David R. Harlow, rented, however, to other parties. Mr. Harlow's residence is south of the court-house site, on the same side of the road. Abner Harlow, father of David R., came to this town from Vermont, reaching here the day after the court-house burned, and settled a half-mile west of the hill, on what is now the place of James Young. ' THE MIDDLE LINE ROAD contains many historic points, --the old Gordon honiestead, where General Washington dined in 1783; the site of Gordon's grist-mill, the remains of the dam being still visible in the creek south of the mansion and near the road; the points in the Tory raids where they seized their prisoners; and the houses they pilluged, and many others. The traditional stories of olden times are full of interest, abounding in "moving accidents by field and flood," hair-breadth escapes, thrilling encounters and hasty flights. All this has passed away. Peace and civil order prevail. In all this now beautiful section of country "the desert has blossomed like the rose and the-wilderness become a fruitful field." Download or read book Remarkable Rise of Eliza Jumel written by Margaret Oppenheimer and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notorious life and times of one of the wealthiest women in 19th-century America Born into grinding poverty, Eliza Jumel was raised in a brothel, indentured as a servant, and confined to a workhouse when her mother was in jail. Yet by the end of her life, "Madame Jumel" was one of the richest women in New York, with servants of her own and mansions in Manhattan and Saratoga Springs. During her remarkable life, she acquired a fortune from her first husband, a French merchant, and almost lost it to her second, the notorious vice president Aaron Burr. Divorcing Burr amid lurid charges of adultery, Jumel lived on triumphantly to the age of 90, astutely managing her property and public persona. After her death, while family members extolled her virtues, claimants to her estate painted a different picture: of a prostitute, the mother of George Washington's illegitimate son, and a wife who ruthlessly defrauded her husband and perhaps even plotted his death. With this book, author Margaret A. Oppenheimer draws from archival documents and court filings, many untouched since the 1800s, to tell the true and full story of Eliza Jumel.

Book excerpt: Census records and name lists for New York are found mostly at the county level, which is why this work shows precisely which census records or census substitutes exist for each of New York's sixty-two counties and where they can be found. In addition to the numerous statewide official censuses taken by New York, this work contains references to census substitutes and name lists for time periods in which the state did not take an official census. It also shows the location of copies of federal census records and provides county boundary maps and numerous state census facsimiles and extraction forms.
