Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Jewish community of 1769 to that of 1917 is a far cry--the one resident of colonial times to the lawyers, doctors, bankers, artists, merchant princes and artisans of today. Success to a phenomenal degree has been theirs. What they accomplished has been by virtue of their own brain and good right arm. To penal and eleemosynary institutions they were practically strangers. They have, it is true, figured in the criminal courts--as the brightest of lawyers ; their escutcheons are often crossed with the bar sinister of a rope--it is not pendant from a tree, but a peddler's pack. Of all the successful Jews In Richmond today there is not one of whom it can be truthfully said that he owes aught of it to "pull." Theirs has been the conquest of "push." The remarkable part is all this has been achieved by stress of energy alone. They came to this country with only their good names, their indomitable wills, with the single purpose of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," and the right to practice their ancient faith as their consciences dictated. -- Pg. Book Synopsis A Noble Fight by : Corey D. B. Walker
Download or read book A Noble Fight written by Corey D. B. Walker and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Noble Fight examines the metaphors and meanings behind the African American appropriation of the culture, ritual, and institution of freemasonry in navigating the contested terrain of American democracy. Combining cultural and political theory with extensive archival research--including the discovery of a rare collection of nineteenth-century records of an African American Freemason Lodge--Corey D. B. Walker provides an innovative perspective on American politics and society during the long transition from slavery to freedom. With great care and detail, Walker argues that African American freemasonry provides a critical theoretical lens for understanding the distinctive ways African Americans have constructed a radically democratic political imaginary through racial solidarity and political nationalism, forcing us to reconsider much more circumspectly the complex relationship between voluntary associations and democratic politics. Mapping the discursive logics of the language of freemasonry as a metaphoric rendering of American democracy, this study interrogates the concrete forms of an associational culture, revealing how paradoxical aspects of freemasonry such as secrecy and public association inform the production of particular ideas and expressions of democracy in America.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 9 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 9 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Nine of the project documenting Thomas Jefferson's last years presents 523 documents from 1 September 1815 to 30 April 1816. In this period, Jefferson makes three trips to Poplar Forest. During two visits to the Peaks of Otter, he measures their altitude and his calculations are reprinted in several newspapers. Jefferson welcomes the returning war hero Andrew Jackson in a visit to Poplar Forest and offers a toast at a public dinner in Lynchburg held in the general's honor. With the end of the War of 1812, Jefferson uses European contacts to begin restocking his wine cellar and refilling his bookshelves. In a draft letter to Horatio G. Spafford, Jefferson indulges in a "tirade" against a pamphlet by a New England clergyman. Jefferson decides to drop the section from the letter but sends it to Richmond Enquirer publisher Thomas Ritchie with permission to publish it without Jefferson's name. An anonymous letter in the Washington Daily National Intelligencer on the interpretation of the U.S. Constitution elicits a similarly anonymous response from Jefferson. His family circle grows with the birth of a great-granddaughter. Despite a report of his death, Jefferson continues to enjoy perfect health.
Book Synopsis Brothers of a Vow by : Ami Pflugrad-Jackisch
Download or read book Brothers of a Vow written by Ami Pflugrad-Jackisch and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Brothers of a Vow, Ami Pflugrad-Jackisch examines secret fraternal organizations in antebellum Virginia to offer fresh insight into masculinity and the redefinition of social and political roles of white men in the South. Young Virginians who came of age during the antebellum era lived through a time of tremendous economic, cultural, and political upheaval. In a state increasingly pulled between the demands of the growing market and the long-established tradition of unfree labor, Pflugrad-Jackisch argues that groups like the Freemasons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Sons of Temperance promoted market-oriented values and created bonds among white men that softened class distinctions. At the same time, these groups sought to stabilize social hierarchies that subordinated blacks and women. Pflugrad-Jackisch examines all aspects of the secret orders--including their bylaws and proceedings, their material culture and regalia, and their participation in a wide array of festivals, parades, and civic celebrations. Regarding gender, she shows how fraternal orders helped reinforce an alternative definition of southern white manhood that emphasized self-discipline, moral character, temperance, and success at work. These groups ultimately established a civic brotherhood among white men that marginalized the role of women in the public sphere and bolstered the respectability of white men regardless of class status. Brothers of a Vow is a nuanced look at how dominant groups craft collective identities, and it adds to our understanding of citizenship and political culture during a period of rapid change.
