Book excerpt: "Many Protestants settled in Texas before she gained her Independence, but they necessarily had, for the most part, to conduct their activities secretly. It seems that Protestant ministers came to Texas and preached as early as 1812, and that a church was organized prior to 1820. Reliable information is, however, not available. Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian ministers appeared in Texas almost simultaneously, but the Methodists were the earliest to engage in active work. At first religious education was confined to the home, the pulpit, and the Sunday schools; but as soon as Protestantism was legalized in Texas, the various churches, as well as individuals, began to plan educational institutions. This work does not propose to name and classify all these early schools, but aims to examine only a sufficient number of them to indicate their general character and work. Their literary and religious aspects rather than material assets have been considered. For the sake of brevity and to narrow the field this course was necessary. The religious aspects constitute the major interest. In the study of the early Texas schools and colleges it was advisable to associate them with the age in which they lived; and to treat, as nearly as possible, the factors that influenced their origin, growth, and control. In order that the author might see into these institutions as deeply as he could, he examined carefully their charters and any other available history relative to their origin, and in this way endeavored to discover the purposes and influences that worked in the hearts of their founders"--Leaves v-vi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published by TCU Press in 1947, Colby Hall’s book History of Texas Christian University: A College of the Cattle Frontier is the story of the first seventy-five years of the institution. Tracing the evolution of Add Ran College to Add Ran University, and ultimately to Texas Christian University, Hall shows the struggles and success in the transformation of a frontier college dedicated to educating and developing Christian leadership for all walks of life to a university dedicated to facing the challenges imposed by a new world frontier following World War II. Drawing upon numerous sources, including many unpublished documents, personal correspondence, and the author’s own recollections of his association with the university, Hall provides a detailed account of TCU's history and reveals how its founders' dreams were realized. Hall’s narrative skillfully weaves the development of the school into the history of Texas, at the same time elaborating upon the development of collegiate education in Texas and the establishment of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the state. Recognizing that TCU is much more than an institution, Hall specifically emphasizes the contributions of the people and personalities who helped shape the growth of the school.

Despite their notable individual autonomy, these schools have retained a consistent belief system and mission over several decades. Private religious schools can be traced to our nation’s earliest origins. Why is it that these unique educational institutions arose in twentieth-century America and have continued to thrive? A Christian America Restored seeks to delve into the beginnings of private Christian schools and discovers that while they are relatively new on the educational landscape of America, their roots are actually quite deep, connecting with the ongoing dreams of our nation’s conservative evangelicals.

Book excerpt: The crusade of the Religious Right to shape Texas public schools in the sixties, seventies and eighties had an impact on the direction and comprehensiveness of education received by students. Although religious rightists lost in most confrontations with public education, their influence came in delaying the development of new education programs and in altering the programs that already existed. Attacks from religious rightists also provoked some overreaction from the educational establishment and caused some confusion by exploiting supposed weaknesses in the public education system.
