CHAPTER XVI IN THE MEXICAN WAR Rupture Over Texas--United States Claims Unsettled--American Troops Move To The Frontier--War Declared--Response Of Michigan And Monroe County--Soldiers From Monroe County. One of the most important topics which claimed the attention of the administration of President James Knox Polk, the tenth President of the United States, was the annexation of Texas. On the last day of his official term, his predecessor, President John Tyler, had sent a messenger to the Texan government with a copy of the joint resolutions of the American congress in favor of annexation. These were considered by a convention of delegates called for the purpose of forming a state constitution for Texas; that body approved of the measure by resolution on July 4, 1845; on that day Texas became one of the states of the American union. Rupture Over Texas As had been foreseen and predicted, this act caused an immediate rupture between the United States and Mexico; for the latter claimed Texas as a part of its territory; notwithstanding the fact that its independence had been acknowledged by the United States, England, France and other governments. On March 6. 1845, congress had adopted the joint resolution for the admission of Texas into the union, General Almonto, the Mexican minister at Washington formerly protested against that measure and demanded his passports. On the 4th of June following, General Herrera, President of Mexico, issued a proclamation declaring the rights of Mexico and his determination to defend them--by arms, if . necessary. United States Claims Unsettled But independent of the cause complained of, there already existed a cause for serious disputes between the United States and Mexico. Ever since the establishment of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, Monroe County offers a rich tapestry of history for those willing to look. French-Canadian settlers left behind legends of monsters, ghosts, and witches. In war time, the community answered the call to arms with more soldiers per capita than any other county in the nation and proved a suitable hometown to take refuge between gun shots from none other than George Armstrong Custer. Like most communities, its sordid past reveals crimes and tragedies--including body snatching. More recently, a partial nuclear meltdown brought the city to the brink of disaster, but Monroe not only survived but now thrives. Join local author Shawna Lynn Mazur for a trip through little-known and forgotten parts of Monroe County's past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Real Custer takes a good hard look at the life and storied military career of George Armstrong Custer—from cutting his teeth at Bull Run in the Civil War, to his famous and untimely death at Little Bighorn in the Indian Wars. Author James Robbins demonstrates that Custer, having graduated last in his class at West Point, went on to prove himself again and again as an extremely skilled cavalry leader. Robbins argues that Custer's undoing was his bold and cocky attitude, which caused the Army's bloodiest defeat in the Indian Wars. Robbins also dives into Custer’s personal life, exploring his letters and other personal documents to reveal who he was as a person, underneath the military leader. The Real Custer is an exciting and valuable contribution to the legend and history of Custer that will delight Custer fans as well as readers new to the legend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a historic battlefield site is discovered and studied, the focus is often on the “hardware”: remnants of weaponry, ammunition, supplies, and equipment that archaeologists carefully unearth, analyze, conserve, and frequently place on display in museums. But what about the “software”? What can archaeology teach us about the humans involved in the conflict: their social mores and cultural assumptions; their use and understanding of power? In The Archaeology of Engagement: Conflict and Revolution in the United States, Dana L. Pertermann and Holly K. Norton have assembled a collection of studies that includes sites of conflicts between groups of widely divergent cultures, such as Robert E. Lee's mid-1850s campaign along the Concho River and the battles of the River Raisin during the War of 1812. Notably, the second half of the book applies the editors’ principles of conflict event theory to the San Jacinto Battlefield in Texas, forming a case study of one of America's most storied—and heavily trafficked—battle sites.

Book excerpt: The stories of more than two dozen ordinary people who led extraordinary lives are told here with honesty and wit by a historian who has been writing about northwest Ohios history for more than 60 years. Some of the people chronicled in the book were famous in their day, but are virtually forgotten today. Others gained a measure of renown for their unusual lifestyles only after their deaths. And still others are receiving well-deserved recognition for the first time in these pages. Among those featured in the book are nationally known figures, like Teresa Brewer, Art Tatum, Joe E. Brown, Millie Benson, Brand Whitlock, Peter Navarre, Rose La Rose, Ed Libbey, Mike Owens and Edmund Osthaus, as well as highly-accomplished, but lesser known folks, such as Richard and Anna Mott, Grant Johnson, Doc and Ella Stewart, Ed Russell, Clyde and Carrie Tingley, Dr. Ernst and Therese Gottschalk, Mother Adelaide Sandusky, Jibby Jibilian, Jorgen Faldt Larsen, Colonel Christopher McLean, C. J. Hurrle and Marjorie Whiteman.
