Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Methodism Within the Bounds of the Erie Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 1 As far back as memory runs we were accustomed to sit by the knee of our venerable paternal grand mother, who was converted in Ireland under the preaching of the Rev. John Wesley, and of hearing her describe the different preachers she had heard both in Ireland and in America, and especially since she came to the West. And our excellent mother, who united with the Church in the wilderness in her sixteenth year, used ofien to relate to us the scenes she had witnessed, and describe the ministers she had heard, and the revivals of religion she had known. And then our father obtained license to preach when we were quite young, and traveled and preached extensively as a local preacher, and assisted in revi vals and in forming classes, and from him we oh tained much valuable information. And \it was our. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twin City Methodism: A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn.; With Illustrated Biographical Department Containing Pen Pictures of Preachers and People Twin City Methodism is the first work of the kind that has as yet been published in the history of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It does not claim the cyclopedia style, for it is limited to the interests of local Methodism, and has not dealt with these facts in an elaborate manner. It is a plain, simple presentation to the friends of the church and to the general reader, of the chief events of Twin City Methodism, as gleaned from history and biography. The size of the book is no measure of the available material, for at times the editor has been overwhelmed by the very wealth of information which he has been compelled to condense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Methodism: Its Divisions and Unification The largest ecclesiastical family of the Protestant type in the United States of America is the group of Churches called Methodistic. Beginning in colonial days, it has, throughout the entire existence of the nation, been in touch with all the stages of national development, and, exerting a marked influence upon all grades of society, it has had a very direct part in molding the national life. While it held strategic positions in the cities, it ministered also to the rural regions, and its pioneer preachers followed those who sought homes in the wilderness, and, by their religious services, they saved the frontier from lapsing into barbarism. It was also a unifying force, as in the colonial days and in other periods of the country's history, its itinerant ministers, like soldiers under orders, moved from one part of the land to another binding the people of the different sections together by a common spiritual bond. So great has been the influence of Methodism upon the people generally that no one can thoroughly understand the history of the United States who is not fairly familiar with the movements of Methodism from its beginning in this land. As Wesley had much to do in making a new England, across the sea, so his followers on this side the Atlantic have had much to do with the making of the great American Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centennial of New England Methodism: A Full Report of the Services Held in People's Church, Boston, Mass;, October 21-23, 1890, With Additional Historical Material The Publishers cannot hope that this book will meet with uniform approval, since they are not satisfied with it themselves. By this they do not mean to be understood as having any doubts concerning the value of the work for which they solicit the patronage of their fellow Methodists. We most assuredly believe that we are giving to each purchaser the full value of the price asked. But the general theme of this book has opened so wide and so fertile a field of investigation, that we have often wished that we had the time and means necessary for the publication of a much larger volume than this. Many things which must be omitted from a book with the limitations of the present volume would repay preservation in permanent shape. Book excerpt: Methodism is growing, both in numbers and influence, according to the World Methodist Council there are 78 Methodist, Wesleyan, and related Uniting and United churches representing over 80 million people in more than 130 nations. There are clear reasons for its success. Among them are commitment to evangelize and nurture people with the message of God's presence, love, and direction. That includes an appreciation for, and practice of, the holistic nature of the Wesleyan tradition which involves faith nurtured in the biblical narrative, disciplined personal and communal spirituality and holy living, vibrant preaching, worship, and fellowship, and a faith which rejoices in personal and social reform. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Methodism presents the history of Methodism through a detailed chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries on important institutions and events, doctrines and activities, and especially persons who have contributed to the church and also broader society in the three centuries since it was founded. This book is an ideal access point for students, researchers, or anyone interested in the history of the Methodist Church.

Book excerpt: This convenient volume offers a panoramic view of the forces and personalities that shaped The United Methodist Church in the United States. Three noted United Methodist historians provide laypersons with a brief history of The United Methodist Church. They skillfully trace the church's origins, beginning with a look at the renewal movement that led to the early denominations within Wesleyanism. They continue through the Second Great Awakening, the periods of slavery and the Civil War, the mergers and unions of the twentieth century, the causes championed by United Methodism, and more.
