Book excerpt: The History of Medicine in Fayette County (Kentucky) Oral History Project contains interviews with physicians and medically trained administrators. These individuals were involved in the practice of various medical specializations, the creation and administration of medical institutions, and in medical politics in Fayette County and other Kentucky locales over the course of the twentieth century. Most interviews would be categorized as "whole life," with an emphasis on the interviewees' connection with health care in Fayette County, including the University of Kentucky A. B. Chandler Medical Center, the Lexington Clinic, the Fayette County Medical Society, the Kentucky (State) Medical Association, and such hospitals as Central Baptist, (Good) Samaritan, St. Joseph's, and the Veteran's Administration Hospital. There is also discussion of other Kentucky medical institutions, such as Frontier Nursing Service, and the Miners Memorial Hospitals, later renamed Appalachian Regional Hospitals, Inc., now Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Inc. Medical practices and the changes to medicine and health care, locally and in the larger state and national contexts are discussed.
