Book Synopsis Subversive Spirituality by : Eugene H. Peterson
Download or read book Subversive Spirituality written by Eugene H. Peterson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997-06-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Subversive Spirituality Peterson has gathered together a host of writings penned over the past twenty-five years that reflect on the overlooked facets of the spiritual life. Comprising occasional pieces, short biblical studies, poetry, pastoral readings, and interviews, this work captures the epiphanies of life with the pleasing pastoral style and inspiring depth of insight for which Peterson is well known. Peterson describes his book this way: "This gathering of articles and essays, poems and conversations, is a kind of kitchen midden of my noticings of the obvious in the course of living out the Christian life in the vocational context of pastor, writer, and professor. The randomness and repetitions and false starts are rough edges that I am leaving as is in the interests of honesty. Spirituality is not, by and large, smooth. I do hope, however, that these pieces will be found to be freshly phrased".
Book Synopsis The Lynching of Cleo Wright by : Dominic J. CapeciJr.
Download or read book The Lynching of Cleo Wright written by Dominic J. CapeciJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 20, 1942, black oil mill worker Cleo Wright assaulted a white woman in her home and nearly killed the first police officer who tried to arrest him. An angry mob then hauled Wright out of jail and dragged him through the streets of Sikeston, Missouri, before burning him alive. Wright's death was, unfortunately, not unique in American history, but what his death meant in the larger context of life in the United States in the twentieth-century is an important and compelling story. After the lynching, the U.S. Justice Department was forced to become involved in civil rights concerns for the first time, provoking a national reaction to violence on the home front at a time when the country was battling for democracy in Europe. Dominic Capeci unravels the tragic story of Wright's life on several stages, showing how these acts of violence were indicative not only of racial tension but the clash of the traditional and the modern brought about by the war. Capeci draws from a wide range of archival sources and personal interviews with the participants and spectators to draw vivid portraits of Wright, his victims, law-enforcement officials, and members of the lynch mob. He places Wright in the larger context of southern racial violence and shows the significance of his death in local, state, and national history during the most important crisis of the twentieth-century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR Tampa richly deserves its reputation as a dynamic leader of the Sun Belt, a city whose self-confidence is apparent in the spirit of its and their enthusiastic building for the future. But Tampa, as we native Floridians know, boasts a history as impressive as its future. Long before Americans savored a hand-rolled cigar, or marveled at the international airport, Tampa had established its reputation as a frontier post, a cattle center and a gateway to the Gulf. Names like De Soto, McKay, Lesley, Gutierrez, Plant, Ybor, Spicola, Knight, Lykes and Ferguson-these names have enriched Tampa. Tampa has, in turn, added luster to the Sun- shine State. The authors, Gary Mormino and Tony Pizzo, have captured Tampa’s special sheen with words and pictures that will make its fame and beauty even more broadly recognized than they are to- day. Their work is a worthy contribution to the American Portrait Series and does credit not only to their subject, but to their talent. It would make a great addition to your home, school or as a Christmas present that should get much use. Book excerpt: "Williams had deep roots in Sussex Country, the most southern, most rural, and most socially conservative part of Delaware. The book examines Williams's involvement in the country's poultry industry from its beginnings during the 1920s through the turbulent World War II years when Sussex poultry producers tangled with federal government officials from the Office of Price Administration and the U.S. Army. The war years coincided with the maturation of poultry production in Sussex that brought the county's people into more complex and wide-ranging economic, social, and political interactions. It was in reaction to these events that John Williams decided to run for the U.S. Senate."--BOOK JACKET.
