Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of General Sir Charles Napier's Administration of Scinde, and Campaign in the Cutchee Hills When the History of Sir C. Napier's Conquest of Scinde was.published, an account of his after administration in that country was promised as a sequel; hence the present work, whichincludes also his campaign against the hillmen of Cutchee. It is dedicated? As the History of the Conquest was, to the British people, because from the people only can support be looked for against the um ceasing efforts made to suppress the just claims of a victorious general, 'and successful administrator, to the applause of his countrymen. But to obtain that support ingenuously, the man's thoughts as well as his actions should be made known'with all integrity - wherefore his opinions of government generally, of particular systems, and his views and feelings on every important occasion, have been, where the necessity of compression would admit, recorded in his own words. Book Synopsis The Chartist General by : Edward Beasley
Download or read book The Chartist General written by Edward Beasley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Charles James Napier was sent to confront the tens of thousands of Chartist protestors marching through the cities of the North of England in the late 1830s. A well-known leftist who agreed with the Chartist demands for democracy, Napier managed to keep the peace. In South Asia, the same man would later provoke a war and conquer Sind. In this first-ever scholarly biography of Napier, Edward Beasley asks how the conventional depictions of the man as a peacemaker in England and a warmonger in Asia can be reconciled. Employing deep archival research and close readings of Napier's published books (ignored by prior scholars), this well-written volume demonstrates that Napier was a liberal imperialist who believed that if freedom was right for the people of England it was right for the people of Sind -- even if "freedom" had to be imposed by military force. Napier also confronted the messy aftermath of Western conquest, carrying out nation-building with mixed success, trying to end the honour killing of women, and eventually discovering the limits of imperial interference.

Book Synopsis The First Aga Khan: Memoirs of the 46th Ismaili Imam by : Daryoush Mohammad Poor
Download or read book The First Aga Khan: Memoirs of the 46th Ismaili Imam written by Daryoush Mohammad Poor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I.B. Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies Muhammad Hasan al-Husayni, also known as Hasan 'Ali Shah and, more generally, as the Aga Khan (1804-1881), was the 46th Imam of the Nizari Ismailis and the first Ismaili Imam to bear the title of Aga Khan, bestowed on him by the contemporary Qajar monarch of Persia. This book is the first English translation of his memoirs, the 'Ibrat-afza, `A Book of Exhortation, or Example', and includes a new edition of the Persian text and a detailed introduction to the work and its context. The 'Ibrat-afza was composed in the year 1851, following the Ismaili Imam's departure from Persia and his permanent settlement in India. The text recounts the Aga Khan's early life and political career as the governor of the province of Kirman in Persia, and narrates the dramatic events of his conflict with the Qajar establishment followed by his subsequent travels and exploits in Afghanistan and British India. The 'Ibrat-afza provides a rare example of an autobiographical account from an Ismaili Imam and a first-hand perspective on the regional politics of the age. It offers a window into the history of the Ismailis of Persia, India and Central Asia at the dawn of the modern era of their history. Consequently, the book will be of great interest to both researchers and general readers interested in Ismaili history and in the history of the Islamic world in the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis What Is Antiracism? by : Arun Kundnani
Download or read book What Is Antiracism? written by Arun Kundnani and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scintillating intellectual and political history provides a new understanding of racism, and a better way to fight it Liberals have been arguing for nearly a century that racism is fundamentally an individual problem of extremist beliefs. Responding to Nazism, thinkers like gay rights pioneer Magnus Hirschfeld and anthropologist Ruth Benedict called for teaching people, especially poor people, to be less prejudiced. Here lies the origin of today's liberal antiracism, from diversity training to Hollywood activism. Meanwhile, a more radical antiracism flowered in the Third World. Anticolonial revolutionaries traced racism to the broad economic and political structures of modernity. Thinkers like C.L.R. James, Claudia Jones, and Frantz Fanon showed how racism was connected to colonialism and capitalism, a perspective adopted even by Martin Luther King. Today, liberal antiracism has proven powerless against structural oppression. As Arun Kundnani demonstrates, white liberals can heroically confront their own whiteness all they want, yet these structures remain. This deeply researched and swift-moving narrative history tells the story of the two antiracisms and their fates. As neoliberalism reordered the world in the last decades of the twentieth century, the case became clear: fighting racism means striking at its capitalist roots.
