The author will take pleasure in yet giving them a place in an appendix to the little work. But for urgent solicitations from friends I should not have undertaken this book at my advanced stage of life, and hope the readers of it will pardon any errors or omissions. The friends to the work have been very kind in furnishing material for it. I will here state that during my ilness I was greatly indebted to a young friend, a descendant of two prominent families spoken of in this work, for the interest manifested in copying my reminiscences, and letters from correspondents, relative to my book. "Then I remember all The friends, so linked together, I've seen around me fall Like leaves in wintry weather; I feel like one Who treads alone Some banquet hall deserted, When lights are fled, Whose garlands dead, And all but me departed;" I shall begin by giving a few extracts from Simmer's Geography of South Carolina. "Fairfield was first settled by emigrants from Virginia and North Carolina. It derived its name most probably from the grateful appearance which it made in the eyes of wanderers, weary with long looking for a resting place. It is bounded on the north by Chester District, on the south by Richland, on the west and northwest by Broad River, which devides it from Union, Newberry and Lexington; son on the northeast by the Wateree end Satawba Rivers, which separate it from a part of Lancaster and Kershaw, fairfield is on an average 32 miles in length and 23 in width. The soil is very veriuos, combining the best end the worse of the upcountry. The lands on the water courses are rich and inexhaustible, cotton of the short staple variety, is much cultivated. The small grains grow well in Fairfield, wheat and oats in particular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fairfield County is a unique blend of tradition, culture, and history. Freedom-seekers, farmers, and religious folks came from the northern trails, while many aristocrats and plantation owners traveled from the coast. These citizens bred a unique and proud folk ranging from sturdy military men who protected their land during the American Revolution and the Civil War to educators who started well-known educational institutions and produced prominent military men and politicians who forever changed the world. Fairfield County is also known for its culture and music. Many recognized beauty queens, artists, musicians, and sports figures hail from this midland region of South Carolina.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Condition of the Catawba Indians of South Carolina The one thing to be impressed upon the average Indian is that he is not being wronged now, and that he has done just as much wrong as he has received in the past, and that he ought not to look back on that at all, and that above all things he must work, just as a white man does. One of the most pernicious things that can be done is to pet too much the Indians that make good progress, and this is the thing that Eastern sentimentalists are very apt to do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Colored People of South Carolina: With an Account of the Origin and Progress of the Colored Race and Human Slavery Up to this time, I have taken no active part in pub lic affairs. I stood as a careful observer upon the political river. And now, in my 23d year, having passed a life of hardship and toil, I feel myself called upon, as by the impulse of fate, to defend the rights of the unfortunate race, to which I belong. In my feeble effort to perform this sacred duty, I hope that I will receive the aid of all my fellow-men, who know (as all ought to) that we are one in blood and one in color. And if they fail to regard my works, I know that I will have, as I have always had, the Sanction of the Most Most Holy, the Supreme Ruler of Heaven, (1 hell. With this reliance I now begin my story which I hope will be alive and of use when my body be sleeping in the grave and my soul appears before the high tribunal of Almighty God.
