Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of California The following book was written because there seemed to be a demand for a History of California which should sketch the main events of the country from its discovery to the present time. The pioneer, under whose observation the. Most exciting of these events have occurred, confesses the need of such a book. The thousands who have entered the State since it assumed its present peaceful aspect, complain of the lack of a succinct story of what had to be done here to make the land so pleasant a home. The material for a history of California is abundant. The log-books of ancient mariners who visited the coast - the voluminous, if not well-kept archives of the Government, while the territory was under Spanish or Mexican rule - the official reports and Congressional documents about the transfer to the United States - the files of newspapers since the land was Americanized the scores of books of intelligent travellers, who have put their impressions on record, and the oral evidence of natives, and early immigrants, who mingled in all the affairs most interesting to us - from these sources may be drawn ample details of life in California, from dates as far in the past as any but enthusiastic antiqua rians care to retire to. It did not grow out of complex situations. A series of logical events succeeded each other, apparently in natural sequence, until a typical State of the United States was completely evolved. Its history since its admission is equal in interest to its romantic past and its thrilling present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Leaves of American History: Comprising a Separate History of California This is an age in which men live in the present, and even in the conjectural future, more than in the past. From the electric rapidity of communication, the news of the world comes every day fresh to our firesides; and we have little leisure for reading more. But since every American, whether for the uses of business or politics, needs the current history of the United States, briefly arranged to his hand, - this volume of its "Last Leaves" has been prepared. The account of the Mexican war, herein contained, is taken from the author's history of "The Republic of America;" but that of California is not in any other work. Of the part which follows, a portion is taken from "The Republic," and the remainder is prepared expressly for this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of California: The American Period As the title indicates, this volume deals with the American period of California history. It thus aims to complement the work of Dr. Charles E. Chapman, whose History of California: the Spanish Period, has already made its welcome appearance from the press. As the preface to this latter volume states, the general plan of the two books was agreed upon as far back as 1914. Since that date, Dr. Chapman and the writer "have been in constant communication, but otherwise working independently, with the view to producing between them, an authoritative popular history of California." With the exception of a slight overlapping of the writer's opening chapters with the closing pages of Dr. Chapman's narrative (an overlapping, however, which has involved almost no actual repetition of incident), each book covers a separate field. Yet the keynote of the two volumes is essentially the same, namely, that California history is vastly more significant because of its national and international aspects than for any local interest it may possess. From this standpoint, the event of primary importance in the history of California is its transformation from a Mexican province into an American state. To this event, as Dr. Chapman shows, the Spanish period looks forward; from this event, dates the California of today and the greater California of tomorrow. In preparing this volume for the press, the writer has had in mind three objects - to make his book conform to the canons of sound scholarship; to escape a provincial and localized point of view; and to avoid being classed with those "who write for nothing so irrelevant as a reader." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the College of California The history of the College of California is an important chapter in the educational history of the State. As such it deserves a permanent record, which it has not hitherto had. It deserves it all the more, because it belongs to the earliest period of that history, and if unwritten would be forgotten. Inasmuch as I was Secretary of the Board of Trustees from the beginning, and the executive officer of the College for eight years, the duty of writing this history seemed to fall to me. Perhaps I am the only one who could write it with so full a recollection of the facts. Besides, . I have carefully preserved the materials necessary to its composition, such as the record of the transactions of the Board of Trustees, the Treasurers books, the correspondence of the College, its annual catalogues and occasional circulars, the reports of the Faculty of Instruction, also copies of printed addresses, orations, poems. Alumni proceedings, reports, etc. These materials I have freely used, guided by my own recollection of events as they took place. It has been my purpose, not only to give a correct view of the progress of the institution in a general way, but also a clear idea of its grade of scholarship, and of its principles and aims, both educational and religious. At the same time I have made it to represent quite fully the literature which grew up within the College and around it, giving in full most of its publications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Imperial County, California IT IS related of Lord Byron that when a boy in school he, with his fellows, was required to write a paraphrase of the Biblical account of the miracle of turning water into wine; within a few moments he handed to his teacher this line: The conscious water saw its God and blushed. Nothing could have been added which would have strength ened or added beauty to the matchless setting. May we not, in humble imitation of that great genius, say of Im perial Valley: Its fruitful soil was caressed by the wasting water of an unregarded river and blossomed in perennial beauty? The magic touch of the life-giving water was not an accident. It followed the most intense and unremitting efforts of big brained, big souled men, who wrought under such difficulties and discouragements as would have daunted smaller men. What heroes they were, and how richly they deserve the crowns today so grudgingly bestowed, but which the future will surely bestow upon them.
