Book excerpt: The Michigan 11th Cavalry Regiment has the distinction of having fought in many minor battles and skirmishes, but somehow missing all the major ones. Research of this unit is difficult therefore because relatively little has been written on most of these events, indeed for many all we have is a date and name. On the other hand, this is perhaps the best documented regiments of the war for photographs. More than 50 photos have been found, where most regiments have none. The Michigan 11th Cavalry regiment was organized at Kalamazoo and Detroit, Mich., October 7 to December 10, 1863. At the end of the war they were involved in the pursuit of President Jefferson Davis. At Anderson Court House the last remnant of the Confederate treasury was destroyed. The regiment captured Jefferson Davis' cavalry escort and then moved to Hartwell and Asheville, N. C, Greeneville, Tenn., Strawberry plains, Knoxville and Pulaski, where it was in service at that point until Sept. 22 when it was mustered out. The original strength was 921; gain, 658 total, 1,579. Loss by death, 142. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard-fighting 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry was recruited from sparsely settled southwest Michigan shortly after the Civil War broke out. Mainly composed of young farmers and tradesmen, the regiment rapidly evolved into one of the Army of the Cumberland's elite combat units, tenaciously fighting its way through some of the war's bloodiest engagements. This book--featuring a complete unit roster--chronicles the regiment through the words of the veterans, tracing their development from a rabble of idealists into a fine-tuned fighting machine that executed successful bayonet charges against superior numbers. The narrative continues into the postwar period, discussing the ex-soldiers' careers through Reconstruction and the Gilded Age. Photographs, maps, illustrations and a statistical analysis round out the work.

Book excerpt: The Michigan 23rd Infantry Regiment fought the entire war in the west, beginning in the summer of 1862. They missed the siege of Nashville while pursuing Confederate troops in Tennessee and Kentucky and they also missed the Battle of Chickamauga while involved in follow-up operations at Knoxville. The regiment participated in the Atlanta Campaign followed by Franklin and Nashville, and then participated in Sherman's Carolina Campaign and the final battles at Bentonville and Averasboro. For some unknown reason, they did not participate in the Grand Review in Washington, but were mustered out in late May, 1865 and returned home by rail. With a total enrollment of 1,417, the 23rd had 41 men killed in action, 8 died of wounds and 228 of disease for a total casualty rate of 20%. Book excerpt: The 7th Michigan Infantry was organized at Monroe, Michigan and mustered into Federal service for a three-year enlistment on August 22, 1861. Among the ranks was future brigadier general Henry Baxter, who was captain of Company C. The 7th was assigned to the Army of the Potomac soon after it was formed and served in the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Corps, for the duration of the war. Sister regiments in the 3rd Brigade included the 19th Massachusetts, 20th Massachusetts, 42nd New York, and 59th New York. Infantryman William Rufus Shafter was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks; he later received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the battle. The 7th was one of the first regiments to cross the Rappahannock River on Dec. 11th, 1862 while under fire from Confederate sharpshooters hidden in the buildings of Fredericksburg, the first opposed riverine assault in American military history. In July 1862, Norman J. Hall, a Regular Army artilleryman assumed command of the regiment and led it until he was promoted to brigade command before the Battle of Gettysburg. The regiment was mustered out on July 5, 1865.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Formation, Movements, Camps, Scouts and Battles of the Tenth Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry: Containing a Short Historical Sketch of Every Officer, Connected With the Regiment A history of the events of our lives, which are fraught with importance either to ourselves or to others, is always interesting as well as useful. And, as our country is engaged in a struggle such as modern history nowhere records, a memoranda of the part we have played in the great drama cannot fail to be of interest to ourselves in years to come, when, in imagination, we can live over again Th' exciting scenes, as we look back, Of camp, or macrh, or bivouack, Or fiercely 'gainst the rebels strive, To keep our nation's strength alive; And it will be of no little interest to our friends to see through what scenes we have passed, and trace out our long and tedious marches, and hear of the hardships we have endured for their sakes, and our country's honor and right. On account of the data it contains, we hope this history may prove interesting to those who have taken part in the scenes it seeks to represent. As to its correctness, we would say that we have spared no pains to procure the most correct data which could be obtained, relying upon regimental and company records and daily journals kept during the whole time. We have endeavored to avoid all coloring of events, seeking a medium between the exaggeration of some and the eccentricities of others. Our aim has been to give a plain, truthful statement of facts as they occurred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
