Book excerpt: The 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Columbus, MS, in May 1862, composed principally of men who reorganized, in two or three instances, as entire companies after serving a year as the 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. Slightly more than seven hundred officers and enlisted men were mustered into service as members of the regiment. It was part of the garrison of Vicksburg and lost 10 killed and about 50 wounded there, with the remainder captured at the surrender. The 42nd was in parole camp at Demopolis, then it joined the Army of Tennessee. It fought with severe losses at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. In the spring of 1864, the 42nd fought at Resaca with a loss of 59 killed and wounded. It was then continually skirmishing until the battle of New Hope, where its loss was comparatively light as it was at Atlanta the 22nd of July. On the 28th of July, the loss was heavy. A few days later, the regiment was sent to Spanish Fort where it remained on garrison duty during the fall and until January 1865. It then moved into North Carolina, participated in the battle of Bentonville, and surrendered with the army. Records indicate that the Forty-Second Alabama Infantry was detached from the main body of the Army of Tennessee in early April 1865. The unit was on duty guarding the Yadkin River Bridge when it received the news of the surrender. Companies Of The Alabama 42nd Infantry Regiment Co. A.....from Monroe County Co. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Book excerpt: The Alabama 54th Infantry Regiment was made up of six Alabama companies of the First Alabama-Mississippi-Tennessee Regiment of Col. Baker of Barbour, and four Alabama companies of the regiment of Col. L. M. Walker of Tennessee. These companies had been captured at Island Ten, after nearly a year's arduous service above Memphis. Organized at Jackson, Miss, October 1862, the Fifty-fourth operated in the vicinity of Vicksburg during the winter. It fought at Fort Pemberton with light loss, and at Baker's Creek with equal result. Having escaped Vicksburg by moving with Gen. Loring from Baker's Creek, the Fifty-fourth was soon after at the siege of Jackson. It was then transferred to the army of Gen. Bragg. The regiment wintered at Dalton, and was engaged in the campaign from there to Atlanta, when the Army of Tennessee disputed the ground inch by inch, and stained those inches with blood. The regiment lost severely at Resaca, and at Atlanta July 22. The loss was very heavy at Atlanta July 28, more than half the regiment being killed and wounded, and the flag perforated by forty bullets. Having moved with Hood into middle Tennessee, the Fifty-fourth shared the privations and disasters of that campaign. Transferred to North Carolina, its colors waved defiantly at Bentonville, its last battlefield. A remnant only were surrendered with the forces of Gen. Johnston. Book excerpt: On 16 May 1862, 904 soldiers formed ranks for the first time and unfurled the virgin colors of the 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. These 904 soldiers were a mixture of veterans, volunteers, conscripts, and substitutes. The regiment participated in nine western theater battles and their associated campaigns. These campaigns included Corinth, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and Bentonville. Not one battle was a victory but the heat of battle forged a band of brothers tempered with time. The regiment cased its colors for the last time on 9 April 1865 in a desolate North Carolina field; only ninety-eight soldiers remained at the end of this bloody national struggle. This thesis will identify the timeless factors of cohesion within the 42nd Alabama. This thesis will further determine the most prominent of these factors, specifically within the remaining ninety-eight soldiers. Finally, this thesis will explore the value of cohesion to the current military force. This thesis incorporated sources from the The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Confederate Veteran, The Southern Historical Papers, personal diaries and letters, census records, compiled service records, sources from the Alabama State Archives and the National Park Service. After the examination of numerous factors, to include discipline, leadership, and morale, the common factor that held the core members of the unit together until the end was the "original volunteer" soldiers of 1861. These soldiers formed the cohesive bond of the unit by instilling a common conviction and devotion to duty within the 42nd Alabama. The final analysis reinforces the value of the volunteer soldier and the worth of an "all-volunteer" force.

Coleman on the 13th day of March, 1862, at Speeds Mill in Pickens County, Alabama. It was mustered into Confederate service in May 1862 at Mobile. The regiment remained in Mobile until December when it was moved to Vicksburg to take part in the operations on Deer Creek. While there, it was brigaded with the 37th and 42nd Alabama, and 2nd Texas, under General J. C. Moore. The regiment had 332 effectives in January, 1863. Four companies were there transferred to General Ector's Brigade, General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee and fought at Chickamauga. The other companies of the 40th were part of the garrison of Vicksburg, suffered severely, and were there captured. The regiment was reunited near Missionary Ridge and took part in that battle and at Lookout Mountain, where it suffered 135 casualties. The 40th took part in the campaign from there to Atlanta, with losses especially heavy at New Hope. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 7-31, it lost twenty percent of the 416 engaged. When the army marched back to Tennessee, in company with the other regiments of Baker's Brigade, the 40th was sent to Mobile and was on garrison duty there for some months. In January 1865, the regiment proceeded with the remainder of the army to North Carolina and shared in the operations, fighting at Bentonville with severe loss. After proceeding to Chattanooga, it operated in middle Tennessee for some months and then joined the Army of Tennessee soon after its return from the Kentucky campaign. It was initiated into the harsh realities of war at Murfreesboro. During that episode, it lost its brigadier general and suffered 198 casualties. The regiment then remained at Tullahoma until ordered to Mississippi with the other portions of Breckinridge's Division. It was engaged in the operations for the relief of Vicksburg and was in the trenches at Jackson. Between December 31, 1862 and September 19, 1863, the regiment lost 375 men. It went into the Battle of Chickamauga with only 325 remaining. The 41st was in the forward movement at Chickamauga and in the struggle over the enemy's fortified position. Again, the brigadier general was lost as were 189 casualties of the 325 present from the regiment. As part of Longstreet's corps, the 41st participated in the struggles and privations of the winter campaign in East Tennessee, sustaining heavy losses at Knoxville. The regiment reached Virginia in April 1864 and was engaged in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff and Dutch Gap. It was then in the protracted siege at Petersburg north of the James River, and in the battles around that city. The regiment was engaged at Hatcher's Run and in the fighting on the Appomattox retreat under General Gordon. About 270 men were present under Col. Martin L. Stansel for the surrender. Shortly after, it was sent to east Tennessee, and had several casualties in the fight at Tazewell. The regiment was in the weary march into Kentucky, in Stevenson's division, but did no fighting. When the army returned to Tennessee, the Forty-sixth was placed in a brigade with the Twentieth, Twenty-third, Thirtieth, and Thirty-first Alabama, under Gen. Tracy. In December, with all of Stevenson's division, the regiment was sent to Mississippi. In the battle of Port Gibson, where its brigadier fell, the regiment suffered severely. A few days later it was engaged at Baker's Creek, where its casualties were numerous, and where half the regiment was captured, including the field officers. The remainder were besieged in Vicksburg, suffering severely, and were captured with the fortress. Reorganized at Demopolis, with Gen. Pettus in command of the brigade, the Forty-sixth rejoined the Army of Tennessee. It lost considerably at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, and made its winter quarters at Dalton. At Crow's Valley it was engaged, with several casualties. In the almost constant fighting from Dalton to Atlanta, the ranks of the Forty-sixth were thinned and at Jonesboro its list of casualties was large. Marching with Hood into Tennessee, it was one of the three regiments that made the brilliant fight at Columbia, where its loss was considerable. The Forty-sixth lost several killed and wounded at Nashville, and quite a number captured. It was the rear guard on the retreat, and the brigade was complimented by Gen. Hood in special orders for its services there. Transferred to North Carolina, the Forty-sixth was engaged at Kinston and Bentonville, with severe loss in the latter. Consolidated with the Twenty-third Alabama, with J. B. Bibb of Montgomery as colonel, (Col. Woods was transferred to the Nineteenth Alabama, ) Osceola Kyle as lieutenant colonel, and J. T. Hester of Montgomery as major, the Forty-sixth was surrendered at Salisbury by Capt. Brewer, who had commanded it for two years. Companies Of The AL 46th Infantry Regiment Co. A - Coosa -- George E. Book excerpt: The Alabama 47th Infantry Regiment was organized at Loachapoka, May 22, 1862 and transferred to Virginia late in June. Assigned to Gen. Stonewall Jackson's corps, the regiment was brigaded under General Taliaferro, with three Virginia regiments and the Forty-eighth Alabama. A few weeks later the regiment passed through the ordeal of battle at Cedar Run, where it lost 12 killed and 76 wounded, or nearly a third of its force present. At the second Manassas the Forty-seventh was again engaged, and lost 7 killed and 25 wounded. It was present at Chantilly and the capture of Harper's Ferry; entered the battle of Sharpsburg with 115 men, and lost every commissioned officer present on the field, mustering 17 men the next morning under a sergeant. The regiment wintered on the Rappahannock and witnessed the repulse of Burnside at Fredericksburg. Transferred to the brigade of Gen. Law -- Fourth, Fifteenth, Forty-fourth, Fifty-seventh, and Forty-eighth Alabama -- Hood's division, Longstreet's corps, the Forty-seventh lost several men in the fight at Suffolk. Rejoining the main army, the regiment marched into Pennsylvania, and poured out the blood of its bravest men at Gettysburg. Two months later the corps was transferred to north Georgia, and the Forty-seventh lost very severely at Chickamauga. It took part in the investment of Knoxville with light loss, and in the privations of the winter campaign in east Tennessee. Rejoining the Virginia army the regiment fought with severe loss at the Wilderness, and was in the brilliant charge on Warren's corps at Spottsylvania, where the brigade opened the battle. In all the subsequent operations around Richmond the regiment took part, and in the grim defenses that surrounded Petersburg it endured the perils and privations of the last sullen and persistent struggle. As part of Perry's brigade, the Forty-seventh laid down its arms at Appomattox, about 90 strong. Book excerpt: The Alabama 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola, 18 May 1861, with 8 infantry and 2 mounted companies. It remained on duty there until November. The regiment was ordered to Chattanooga in November, and then a month later, was sent to Bowling Green. The remainder of Gen. Bragg's forces were ordered out of Florida on 27 FEB 1862. Gen. Bragg joined up with Gen. Beauregard's forces in Jackson, Tennessee. The 7th was in a temporary brigade under Col. S. A. M. Wood, and it was included in the Army of Tennessee around Corinth. The time of service of most of the companies expired after 12 months during the first week in April, 1862, and the regiment disbanded. Book excerpt: The 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Huntsville, 14 August 1861, It was ordered to Mobile immediately and remained there about three months, then was at Pensacola for two weeks. Ordered to Corinth, the 19th was brigaded under General Gladden of Louisiana, with the 22nd, 25th, and 50th regiments, and after Shiloh, the 17th Battalion, Sharpshooters, and the 39th regiment. There were few casualties at Missionary Ridge, and the 19th wintered at Dalton. In the almost incessant fighting from there to Atlanta, the regiment lost heavily in casualties, particularly at new Hope and near Marietta. The brigade, under the command of General Johnston of Perry, the 19th was badly cut up in the battles at Atlanta on 22 and 28 July. Losses were slight at Jonesboro. At the Battle of Franklin, the 19th lost only a few to battle wounds, but many were captured. It went to North Carolina and was engaged at Kinston and Bentonville, losing heavily in the latter affair. Then consolidated with the 40th and 46th Alabama regiments at Salisbury (with M. L. Woods as colonel and Ezekiel Gully of Sumter as lt. colonel), the 19th surrendered at that place, 76 strong. Companies Of The Alabama 19th Infantry Regiment Co.
