Coleman on the 13th day of March, 1862, at Speeds Mill in Pickens County, Alabama. It was mustered into Confederate service in May 1862 at Mobile. The regiment remained in Mobile until December when it was moved to Vicksburg to take part in the operations on Deer Creek. While there, it was brigaded with the 37th and 42nd Alabama, and 2nd Texas, under General J. C. Moore. The regiment had 332 effectives in January, 1863. Four companies were there transferred to General Ector's Brigade, General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee and fought at Chickamauga. The other companies of the 40th were part of the garrison of Vicksburg, suffered severely, and were there captured. The regiment was reunited near Missionary Ridge and took part in that battle and at Lookout Mountain, where it suffered 135 casualties. The 40th took part in the campaign from there to Atlanta, with losses especially heavy at New Hope. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 7-31, it lost twenty percent of the 416 engaged. When the army marched back to Tennessee, in company with the other regiments of Baker's Brigade, the 40th was sent to Mobile and was on garrison duty there for some months. In January 1865, the regiment proceeded with the remainder of the army to North Carolina and shared in the operations, fighting at Bentonville with severe loss. Consolidated with the 19th and 46th, the 40th was shortly after surrendered at Durham Station, NC, 26 April 1865. Companies Of The Alabama 40th Infantry Regiment Co. It then proceeded to Tullahoma, and was there placed in the brigade of Gen. Clayton of Barbour, with the Eighteenth, Thirty-sixth, and Fifty-eighth of Alabama regiments. The regiment was first under fire with slight loss at Hoover's Gap, and lost nearly half the regiment killed and wounded at Chickamauga. At Missionary Ridge the Thirty-eighth was again hotly engaged at close quarters, and a large number were captured. It wintered at Dalton, and bore its share in the operations of the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, losing severely, particularly at Resaca and Atlanta. From Marietta to the close, Gen. Holtzclaw of Montgomery commanded the brigade. It fought around the latter city, and at Jonesboro. During the Tennessee campaign of Gen. Hood, the regiment felt the blight of the December frost at Nashville, and was in the rear of the retreat. Placed in the defenses at Mobile, the regiment went through the fiery ordeal at Spanish Fort, where it again suffered severely. With the army, it was surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, about 80 strong.

Book excerpt: The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It reported to General Danville Leadbetter at Chattanooga shortly after. It then moved up to Knoxville, where it was brigaded under General Seth Barton, in Carter Stevenson's Division. After the Kentucky Campaign, the 31st was permanently brigaded with the 20th, 23rd, 30th, and 46th Alabama regiments, under General Edward D. Tracy of Madison, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In December, the 31st accompanied Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Toward the close of the war, the 31st was consolidated with the 23rd and 46th Infantry and redesignated the 23rd Consolidated Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865. Book excerpt: The 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Huntsville, 14 August 1861, It was ordered to Mobile immediately and remained there about three months, then was at Pensacola for two weeks. Ordered to Corinth, the 19th was brigaded under General Gladden of Louisiana, with the 22nd, 25th, and 50th regiments, and after Shiloh, the 17th Battalion, Sharpshooters, and the 39th regiment. There were few casualties at Missionary Ridge, and the 19th wintered at Dalton. In the almost incessant fighting from there to Atlanta, the regiment lost heavily in casualties, particularly at new Hope and near Marietta. The brigade, under the command of General Johnston of Perry, the 19th was badly cut up in the battles at Atlanta on 22 and 28 July. Losses were slight at Jonesboro. At the Battle of Franklin, the 19th lost only a few to battle wounds, but many were captured. It went to North Carolina and was engaged at Kinston and Bentonville, losing heavily in the latter affair. Then consolidated with the 40th and 46th Alabama regiments at Salisbury (with M. L. Book excerpt: The Alabama 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola, 18 May 1861, with 8 infantry and 2 mounted companies. It remained on duty there until November. The regiment was ordered to Chattanooga in November, and then a month later, was sent to Bowling Green. The remainder of Gen. Bragg's forces were ordered out of Florida on 27 FEB 1862. Gen. Bragg joined up with Gen. Beauregard's forces in Jackson, Tennessee. The 7th was in a temporary brigade under Col. S. A. M. Wood, and it was included in the Army of Tennessee around Corinth. The time of service of most of the companies expired after 12 months during the first week in April, 1862, and the regiment disbanded. However, the two mounted companies from Autauga and Lauderdale retained their organization and fought at Shiloh, as did other men from the regiment. The mounted companies became part of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry following Shiloh and the majority of the remaining men and officers joined other organizations. There is some confusion regarding the origin of the regiment. Some accounts show the 29th was created by the addition of two companies to the Fourth Alabama Battalion - a body of eight companies, which had been organized the autumn before at Montgomery. The 29th remained at Pensacola until it was evacuated, suffering much from diseases that usually afflict raw troops. It then lay between Pollard and Pensacola for over a year, when it was ordered to Mobile. The regiment was there from July 1863 to April 1864, except for a short time that it was at Pollard. The regiment joined the Army of Tennessee at Resaca with over 1,000 men, in time to initiate the Atlanta-Dalton campaign. It was brigaded with the 1st, 17th, and 26th Alabama, and 37th Mississippi regiments, commanded at different intervals by Col. Murphey of Montgomery, General O'Neal of Lauderdale, and General Shelley of Talladega. Book excerpt: The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians Ordered to Columbus, MS, after a short time, the regiment proceeded to Tupelo. There it was placed in General Henry Little's Division, and in the Brigade of Col. Martin of TN, with three Mississippi regiments. General Dabney Herndon Maury succeeded General Little when the latter was killed at Iuka, where the 37th was first engaged, with some loss. After Corinth the 37th was placed into a brigade with the 2nd TX, and 42nd AL, General John C. Moore commanding. The 37th lost heavily at Lookout Mountain and quite a number at Mission Ridge. The winter passed at Dalton, GA, where General Alpheus Baker of Barbour took charge of the brigade. The regiment was then engaged at Chattanooga (73 casualties out of 407 men present), Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, and the battles around Atlanta. In one charge at Atlanta, 22 July, the regimental commander and 40 men were killed outright, out of 300 men present. During the fall and winter, the 37th was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort, then moved into North Carolina. The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Consolidated, was organized on 9 April 1865 by combining the original 37th Alabama with the 42nd and 54th Alabama regiments, at Smithfield, NC. It broke the enemy line at Bentonville, and furled its colors a few days later, with 300 of its number present out of the 1100 who took the field originally. . After proceeding to Chattanooga, it operated in middle Tennessee for some months and then joined the Army of Tennessee soon after its return from the Kentucky campaign. It was initiated into the harsh realities of war at Murfreesboro. During that episode, it lost its brigadier general and suffered 198 casualties. The regiment then remained at Tullahoma until ordered to Mississippi with the other portions of Breckinridge's Division. It was engaged in the operations for the relief of Vicksburg and was in the trenches at Jackson. Between December 31, 1862 and September 19, 1863, the regiment lost 375 men. It went into the Battle of Chickamauga with only 325 remaining. The 41st was in the forward movement at Chickamauga and in the struggle over the enemy's fortified position. Again, the brigadier general was lost as were 189 casualties of the 325 present from the regiment. As part of Longstreet's corps, the 41st participated in the struggles and privations of the winter campaign in East Tennessee, sustaining heavy losses at Knoxville. The regiment reached Virginia in April 1864 and was engaged in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff and Dutch Gap. It was then in the protracted siege at Petersburg north of the James River, and in the battles around that city. The regiment was engaged at Hatcher's Run and in the fighting on the Appomattox retreat under General Gordon. About 270 men were present under Col. Martin L. Stansel for the surrender. Ewell of Virginia, who was soon after succeeded by Gen. Rodes of Tuskaloosa. The regiment lay near Manassas during the fall and winter, and moved to Yorktown in the spring of 1862. The 12th continued throughout the war in Virginia. Of the original number of 1196, about 50 were at Appomattox; and of the 321 recruits received, about 70 were there. Nearly 250 died of wounds received in battle, about 200 died of disease, and 202 were discharged. The battle-flag of the regiment is now in Mobile. Book excerpt: The 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Opelika in April 1862 by Henry DeLamar Clayton, an Alabama State Representative. Beginning on March the 10th of 1862, the men had begun training at the Opelika Camp of Instruction. One of the companies, Company F was from Georgia. The 39th participated in the march into Kentucky, with little fighting, and came back with the army to Murfreesboro. The regiment was engaged with heavy losses (95), gaining much credit for repulsing an attack of the enemy. Col. Clayton received a severe wound, leaving the 39th without a commander in this, their first significant battle. He was replaced by Whitfield Clark of Barbour County. The 39th was with the army when it fell back to the Chattanooga line, and it took part in the battle of Chickamauga with a very heavy loss of men (31% of 310 engaged). At Missionary Ridge, the loss was light, and the 39th, now under General Deas of Mobile as brigade commander, wintered at Dalton. It reported 337 men and 219 arms in December, 1863. From there to Atlanta the regiment was conspicuous in all the fighting of the army, suffering severely. They were present in the defense of Atlanta and at Jonesboro where they again lost heavily. They marched with the army into Tennessee and lost a number of prisoners at Nashville. The regiment then moved to the Carolinas with General Johnston and took part in operations there, though much reduced in number. It was there consolidated with the 22nd and 26th and 50th AL regiments but was forced to surrender a few days later on the 26th of April 1865. There were fewer than 90 officers and men remaining. Co. Book excerpt: The 35th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Lagrange, 12 March 1862, with about 750 men. Ordered to Corinth, it was there brigaded under General John C. Breckinridge. It then went to Louisiana and took part in the attack on Baton Rouge, losing 4 killed and 21 wounded. It was part of the force with which General Earl Van Dorn assaulted Corinth; casualties were heavy. Placed under General James Buford, the regiment was under fire at the first bombardment of Port Hudson. It passed some time in that vicinity, and in May 1863, the regiment was engaged at Baker's Creek with light loss. The 35th participated in the Atlanta Campaign where it lost 65 killed and wounded on 22 July at Atlanta, and 27 killed and wounded on the 28th. The regiment moved into Tennessee with General John Bell Hood and was in the advance in the attack on the outpost at Decatur, where it lost 35 killed and wounded. At the Battle of Franklin, the 35th lost 150 killed and wounded, one half of its effective force. The loss at Nashville was light, and the remnant of the regiment proceeded eastward to renew their struggle in the Carolinas. The unit was ordered to Knoxville, TN, then Kentucky where it fought at Fishing Creek (lost 64 men) under General Felix Zollicoffer. Later it was assigned to General Sterling Wood's regiment (with the 33rd AL, 44th TN, and 32nd and 33rd MS regiments). It lost 162 men at the battle of Shiloh. From Dalton to Atlanta the Sixteenth bore an honorable share in the retrograde movement of the Western Army, fighting by day and entrenching by night, and its casualties were 200 in number. At Jonesboro, the Sixteenth lost about 150 of its men, and was an actor in the other scenes of the fearful drama around Atlanta. At Chickamauga the 16th was in Cleburne's division. Its loss was 244 killed and wounded of the 414 engaged. From the disaster at Missionary Ridge the Sixteenth retired and wintered at Dalton. It moved with Hood into Tennessee and fought at Franklin and Nashville losing half its remaining force, and every commissioned officer. A remnant followed the march of the army into the Carolinas, and surrendered at Goldsboro, about 50 men being present. It had been consolidated with the 1st and 45th Alabama regiments.
