Book Synopsis War on Sacred Grounds by : Ron E. Hassner
Download or read book War on Sacred Grounds written by Ron E. Hassner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred sites offer believers the possibility of communing with the divine and achieving deeper insight into their faith. Yet their spiritual and cultural importance can lead to competition as religious groups seek to exclude rivals from practicing potentially sacrilegious rituals in the hallowed space and wish to assert their own claims. Holy places thus create the potential for military, theological, or political clashes, not only between competing religious groups but also between religious groups and secular actors. In War on Sacred Grounds, Ron E. Hassner investigates the causes and properties of conflicts over sites that are both venerated and contested; he also proposes potential means for managing these disputes. Hassner illustrates a complex and poorly understood political dilemma with accounts of the failures to reach settlement at Temple Mount/Haram el-Sharif, leading to the clashes of 2000, and the competing claims of Hindus and Muslims at Ayodhya, which resulted in the destruction of the mosque there in 1992. He also addresses more successful compromises in Jerusalem in 1967 and Mecca in 1979. Sacred sites, he contends, are particularly prone to conflict because they provide valuable resources for both religious and political actors yet cannot be divided. The management of conflicts over sacred sites requires cooperation, Hassner suggests, between political leaders interested in promoting conflict resolution and religious leaders who can shape the meaning and value that sacred places hold for believers. Because a reconfiguration of sacred space requires a confluence of political will, religious authority, and a window of opportunity, it is relatively rare. Drawing on the study of religion and the study of politics in equal measure, Hassner's account offers insight into the often-violent dynamics that come into play at the places where religion and politics collide.

Book Synopsis The Syncretic Traditions of Islamic Religious Architecture of Kashmir (Early 14th –18th Century) by : Hakim Sameer Hamdani
Download or read book The Syncretic Traditions of Islamic Religious Architecture of Kashmir (Early 14th –18th Century) written by Hakim Sameer Hamdani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the historical identity of Kashmir within the context of Islamic religious architecture between early fourteenth and mid-eighteenth century. It presents a framework of syncretism within which the understanding of this architectural tradition acquires new dimensions and possibilities in the region. In a first, the volume provides a detailed overview of the origin and development of Islamic sacred architecture while contextualizing it within the history of Islam in Kashmir. Covering the entirety of Muslim rule in the region, the book throws light on Islamic religious architecture introduced with the establishment of the Muslim Sultanate in the early fourteenth century, and focuses on both monumental and vernacular architecture. It examines the establishment of new styles in architecture, including ideas, materials and crafts introduced by non-Kashmiri missionaries in the late-fourteenth to fifteenth century. Further, it discusses how the Mughals viewed Kashmir and embellished the land with their architectural undertakings, coupled with encounters between Kashmir’s native culture, with its identity and influences introduced by Sufis arriving from the medieval Persianate world. The book also highlights the transition of the traditional architecture to a pan-Islamic image in the post-Independence period. With its rich illustrations, photographs and drawings, this book will interest students, researchers, and professionals in architecture studies, cultural and heritage studies, visual and art history, religion, Islamic studies and South Asian studies. It will also be useful to professional architecture institutes, public libraries, museums, cultural and heritage bodies as well as the general reader interested in the architectural and cultural history of South Asia.

Book Synopsis Countering Insurgencies in India by : E M Rammohun
Download or read book Countering Insurgencies in India written by E M Rammohun and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has discussed six insurgencies that have taken roots in India from its inception. He has gone into the details of its causes and spread as relevant to various insurgencies in different parts of India. The author has supported most of the reasons of its spread with his personal experience, having served in various capacities in these affected areas. Many scholars have written about the causes that lead to insurgencies all over the world, lessons learnt by them and remedial measures adopted by them. Regrettably, the author feels we did not learn any lessons from these. Our oldest insurgency of the Nagas in Nagaland and the Manipur Hills is still festering though ten years of a ceasefire has led to no conclusions. In Kashmir it is the Centre that triggered off the insurgency that Pakistan had failed to initiate on several occasions from 1947 to 1989. Good governance has never been achieved in any of these insurgent states with the sole exception of Tripura. We are in the throes of a Maoist Communist led insurgency in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and part of Maharashtra. All this has been discussed in the book in detail.

Book Synopsis A Social History of Christianity by : John C.B. Webster
Download or read book A Social History of Christianity written by John C.B. Webster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian community in India emerged from an Indian rather than a foreign or an imperial context. Its internal dynamics were shaped far more by Indian social realities than by missionary designs. This book presents a comprehensive social history of Christianity in north-west India, comprising Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, the Union Territories of Delhi and Chandigarh, and the Pakistani Punjab and North-West Frontier Province. The book discusses significant events in the history of the north-west up to 1947, after which it focuses only on India. These events left a lasting impact on Christianity and shaped its future course, culminating in the transfer of churches’ power from foreign missionaries to Indians and proliferation of churches, and the ongoing struggles of the Christian community. The author pays special attention to the Christian community’s caste composition—how caste status and social mobility affected intra- and inter-community relations—religious diversity, uneven demographic distribution, and development, as well as Christianity as a religious movement in the region.
