Book excerpt: The U.S. Mint's Fifty State Quarters Program-its most ambitious program to date-has been a huge popular success. When the final state quarters are released in 2008, many thousands of individuals will have collected one commemorative quarter for each state in the Union. But what can we learn about our country's history and culture from 12.50 worth of quarters? A Pocketful of History tells the intriguing story behind each state's quarter: how each state chose its quarter's design; what is important about the people, scenes, or themes depicted on the coin; and what the collection tells us about how we view ourselves and our heritage. A Pocketful of History will guide readers on a fascinating journey through America's rich history of change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a hundred years England repeatedly invaded France on the pretext that her kings had a right to the French throne. France was a large, unwieldy kingdom, England was small and poor, but for the most part she dominated the war, sacking towns and castles and winning battles - including such glorious victories as Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt, but then the English run of success began to fail, and in four short years she lost Normandy and finally her last stronghold in Guyenne. The protagonists of the Hundred Year War are among the most colourful in European history: for the English, Edward III, the Black Prince and Henry V, later immortalized by Shakespeare; for the French, the splendid but inept John II, who died a prisoner in London, Charles V, who very nearly overcame England and the enigmatic Charles VII, who did at last drive the English out.

Book excerpt: What if you could hold an entire theological library of works in the palms of your hands? Introducing The 210-Book Holy Bible, Apocrypha, and Ancient History Master Collection: the complete volumes of the LSV Holy Bible, The Complete Apocrypha®, and Ancient Historia, accurately and literally translated into contemporary and easy-to-read English. SURPASSING THE ETHIOPIAN BIBLE 210 complete and unabridged books make this the largest single volume Bible with apocrypha ever published. Professionally, literally, and accurately translated over a period of seven years, these major revisions of older works have, for the first time, been translated into contemporary and easy-to-read English, making them accessible to everyone. THE TRUE, DEFINITIVE COLLECTION Unlike similar volumes with abridged and often poorly-formatted and poorly-collated collections, this 210-book library is composed entirely of complete, unabridged, and thoughtfully-arranged works so you get what is advertised. Translated into contemporary English while still achieving accuracy and literalness, the LSV Master Collection is a breath of fresh air compared to the many antiquated alternatives which use hard-to-read 17th, 18th, and early-19th-century public domain translations. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE MASTER COLLECTION: *All 66 books of the Literal Standard Version of the Holy Bible, a major revision of Young's Literal Translation, completed in 2020. *100 books of the 2024 Expanded Edition of The Complete Apocrypha. *All 44 books of Ancient Historia, the groundbreaking, contemporary translation of key works of Josephus and Eusebius, presenting a comprehensive historical companion to the Bible from the time of creation all the way to AD 325. *Extensive companion materials, including additional apocryphal fragments, resources, writings, charts, maps, and a glossary explaining nearly 200 key terms and characters in the biblical narrative. 210-BOOK MASTER COLLECTION FEATURE OVERVIEW: *66 books of the Holy Bible *100 books of The Complete Apocrypha. *44 books of Ancient Historia. *Contemporary English throughout, translated with formal equivalence. *Extensive companion materials, including charts, maps, apologetics, additional writings, and a nearly 200-word glossary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant declared that philosophy began in 1781 with his Critique of Pure Reason. In 1806 Hegel announced that philosophy had now been completed. Eckart Förster examines the reasons behind these claims and assesses the steps that led in such a short time from Kant's "(Bbeginning" to Hegel's "(Bend." He concludes that, in an unexpected yet significant sense, both Kant and Hegel were indeed right. The Twenty-Five Years of Philosophy follows the unfolding of a key idea during this exceptionally productive period: the Kantian idea that philosophy can be scientific and, consequently, can be completed. Förster's study combines historical research with philosophical insight and leads him to propose a new thesis. The development of Kant's transcendental philosophy in his three Critiques, Förster claims, resulted in a fundamental distinction between "(Bintellectual intuition" and "(Bintuitive understanding." Overlooked until now, this distinction yields two takes on how to pursue philosophy as science after Kant. One line of thought culminates in Fichte's theory of freedom (Wissenschaftslehre), while the other--and here Förster brings Goethe's significance to the fore--results in Goethe's transformation of the Kantian idea of an intuitive understanding in light of Spinoza's third kind of knowledge. Both strands are brought together in Hegel and propel his split from Schelling. Förster's work makes an original contribution to our understanding of the classical era of German philosophy--an expanding interest within the Anglophone philosophical community.
