Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Recollections: A Discourse, Delivered at Lebanon, N. H. On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1830: Embracing the Leading Events in the Civil and Ecclesiastical History of Said Town, to the Close of Rev. Isaiah Potter's Ministry "And thou shall remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or no." The usual way the pious mind pursues to strengthen its confidence in God, is to recall former dispensations of divine providence, and thence derive motives for future trust. Moses, in the chapter including the text, avails himself of this circumstance, to induce Israel to confide in God, and render obedience to his commands. They were at a stage in their journey, where the account of God's merciful dealings with them was calculated to elicit their devout gratitude. They had filled up their forty years in the wilderness, and stood on the bank of Jordan, a favorable land-mark where to record the first portion of their history, on their way to the promised land. To refresh their remembrance, their leader recites some of the most interesting Providences of God towards them and their fathers, that they might in future set their hope in God. This should be a leading object in all historical recollections. With this distinctly in view, let us trace the former dealings of God with the inhabitants of this town, and see if we do not find motives of renewed confidence in our heavenly Father, and occasion for sincere regret, that he has been served no better. In doing this, I purpose to review our civil and ecclesiastical history in separate order. The charter granting civil immunities to this town is dated July 4, 1761, in the first year of the reign of George III.; just fifteen years before the declaration of American Independence. The number of Grantees was sixty-two. The majority of these at the time resided at Mansfield, Connecticut, where several of the first proprietors' meetings were holden. Their first meeting is dated October 6, 1761, in which Mr. Nehemiah Estabrook presided as moderator, and Mr. John Salter was clerk. The date of the charter is the same with Plainfield, in this vicinity, two years earlier than Cornish, and three, than Claremont. This accounts for a committee appointed by the proprietors, September 1, 1762, composed of Capt. Nathaniel Hall, Mr. John Hanks, and Mr. John Birchard, "to lay out a horse-road from the old fort No. 4, now Charlestown, to Lebanon." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memories of the Metropolis: A Discourse Delivered on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1853, in the First Presbyterian Church Love of God, love of country, and love of home, are the deepest and purest sentiments to which humanity is competent. They promote both philanthropy and gratitude. They kindle the present by recollections of the past, and by the hopes of the future. They are the soul of that wild, eternal Psalm, whose theme is Providence, repeated from sire to son in endless generations. C., On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1850 Thanksgiving for National blessings is the name of the day; and National blessings are the subject of our dis course. National blessings! They are as large as the land we occupy. They are as varied as its climes, and soils, and products. Yet, with all their variety, they have, as a whole, the same individuality as the broad continent over which they are spread. Since the last Thanksgiving-day, our country has stretched itself from sea to sea. An American citizen may pass, East and West, four thousand miles, and. See the sun rise over and set behind no hills that are not his. The sun greets us with his morning salutation from the Atlantic, and breathes over us his farewell evening bene diction from the Pacific. It is a good land and a large. The very extent of our land - the occupation of a coun try so gigantic by one race, of one origin and tongue; and their union under one system of free government and just law, like that under whose shelter we are thriving, is itself a subject for vast thanksgiving. It is a new thing in the history of the world. Great Empires, in past times, have been composed of diverse people, whose races, histories, languages, institutions, arts, sciences, and general culture, have been most various and conflicting. They have been conglomerates, fused into a. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love of Country: A Discourse, Delivered on Thanksgiving Day, December 12th, 1850, in the Bleecker Street ChurchThese words, taken from one of the most beautiful and touching melodies ever written even under inspiration, are an effusion of religious patriotism. They were prompted by an insult to that sentiment offered to captive Jews by their Oppressors. They that carried us away captive, required us to sing them one of the songs of Zion: How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? The solemn chant would imply insensibility in us, to the dishonor of our country - the Holy Land, with all its sacred associ ations, now lying desolate under the tyrannous hand of our heathen masters. No song of Zion from us shall entertain the ears of profane men, by the river of Babylon. Sooner may the divine judgment deprive us of every use both of hand and tongue.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
