Book excerpt: The subterranean termite genus Reticulitermes includes some of the most economically destructive termites in the United States, where it is estimated that costs associated with prevention and control may reach $11 billion annually. Despite their economic importance, there are large gaps in our understanding of subterranean termite ecology, due to their cryptic nature and the inherent difficulties of studying subterranean activity. In Missouri, subterranean termite communities differ between undeveloped forested and urban landscapes. Reticulitermes hageni Banks occurs in greater proportions than other subterranean termite species in forested landscapes, while Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) occurs in greater proportions than other subterranean termite species in urban landscapes. Thus, it appears that subterranean termite communities change as landscapes are converted from undeveloped to urban. It is not known, however, when Reticulitermes communities change in response to urbanization, or how termite populations invade subdivisions in an altered urban landscape. It is possible that resident subterranean termite populations are eliminated when soils are graded to prepare subdivision sites for construction. It also seems likely that colonies may respond to changing moisture and temperature regimes, or new biotic associations that accompany anthropogenic disturbances and altered landscapes. The purpose of this research is to examine how landscape factors are associated with subterranean termite communities and patterns of invasion as subdivisions are constructed and age over time. Subterranean termites were collected from 25 areas in Columbia, Missouri that were classified along a gradient of urbanization to include 1) undeveloped landscapes; 2) anthropogenically disturbed landscapes; 3) 10-year-old subdivisions; and 4) 20-year-old subdivisions. Subterranean termite communities were assessed by identifying species using PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP). Because secondary reproductive termites can differentiate as colonies mature and age, microsatellite DNA was used to compare breeding structure of colonies from different aged subdivisions to determine whether there is a relationship between colony maturity and the age of subdivisions. Patterns of subterranean termite invasion in subdivisions were further evaluated by examining homes for evidence of termite treatment. The interaction between landscape features and subterranean termite activity was assessed using GIS software. Relative proportions of Reticulitermes spp. in communities occurring in forest landscapes and urban areas are similar to previous reports for the State of Missouri. Termite communities appear to be eliminated in the landscape when undeveloped landscapes are disturbed by subdivision site preparation, although remnant colonies can persist in areas that are not disturbed. Reticulitermes flavipes appears to invade subdivisions quickly regardless of historical landscape; however, R. hageni invasions generally become more common as subdivisions age and forest area increases. Reticulitermes colonies in undeveloped forests are more inbred and likely have more secondary reproductive than colonies in urban subdivisions. Therefore, colonies in forests probably tend to be older than colonies in subdivisions, which may have resulted from recent invasions. Infestation frequencies are lower in historically agricultural subdivisions than historically forested subdivisions at year 10, but frequencies are almost equal by year 20. Infestation frequencies in historically agricultural subdivisions appear to catch up to frequencies in historically forested subdivisions over time, and this is likely correlated with an increase in forest land cover as subdivisions age.

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subterranean termite species in the genus Reticulitermes are ecologically and economically important in the United States. At least six species of the genus Reticulitermes are native from North American forests where they feed on cellulose materials. In urban environments they feed upon dead wood, and therefore infest and destroy man-made wooden structures. Missouri is considered to have a moderate risk for termite infestations when compared with the states of the southeast part of the country. Despite their ecological and economic importance, Missouri's subterranean termite faunal composition and geographic distribution is not well known. Diversity, geographic distribution, and genetic variability of Reticulitermes species within Missouri were studied from approximately 600 samples of termite colonies collected during 2004 and 2005 in nine conservation areas, nine cities located near these conservation areas, and from home infestations occurring at many different locations within the state. Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), Reticulitermes virginicus (Banks), Reticulitermes tibialis Banks and Reticulitermes hageni Banks were found occurring in Missouri. Reticulitermes flavipes and R. hageni were the most abundant species. Reticulitermes flavipes was found to be more abundant in urban environments and home infestations than in woodlands. Reticulitermes hageni also occurs throughout the state but was found to be more abundant in woodlands than in urban environments. This study updated the inventory of Reticulitermes species occurring within the state, provided new records of occurrence of the species in geographical locations not known before, and provided a comprehensive morphometric study of soldiers of Reticulitermes species occurring in both urban and woodlands of Missouri. Ecological studies as well as integrated management may benefit from the information provided in this study.

Book excerpt: The eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, is the most widely dispersed termite in North America. The genus Reticulitermes spp. is responsible for 80% of total termite damage caused to urban structures each year. Little is known about the genetic structure of termites, particularly at the colony level. Evidence for what genetically defines a termite colony is a hotly debated topic in current literature due to the implications such findings would have regarding current lawsuits against pest control operations. Information on termite genetic structure is sparse. In this study, the genetic variation and gene flow among Texas populations of R. flavipes at the statewide level and city level was examined. A 324-337 base pairs segment of the mtDNA, AT-rich region was a polymerase chain reaction amplified from 104 different termite specimens from 12 Texas cities. The DNA extracts were then subjected to PCR amplification using specific primers and it was then sequenced. Using the sequence data and appropriate statistical measures it was found that, at the statewide level, nucleotide and haplotypic diversity is low. Gene flow was found to be low on a statewide basis. At the city level nucleotide and haplotypic diversity was high. The findings of this study provide insights into termite genetic structure.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), were introduced to the top of an arena with a divider of various crack widths. Termites were not able to pass through cracks [less than or equal to]610 microns, and feed on the bottom of the arena. The minimum crack width permitting termites to pass was 711 microns for workers and larvae or 813 microns for soldiers. The percentage of termites passing through a crack increased as crack width increased from 711 to 5000 microns. For 5000 micron cracks that did not restrict access to the bottom filter paper about 74% of the termites passed through and consumed ~40 mg filter paper. As crack size decreased to 711 microns only 35% of termites passed through, however, consumption of filter paper on the bottom (~38 mg) did not significantly decrease. This suggests that any crack [less than or equal to]711 microns would not limit termite damage in a structure. Head capsule dimensions (length, width, and depth) were measured for termites passing through various crack widths. As crack width increased, the maximum head capsule dimension of termites that passed through the crack also increased linearly. Depth of head capsule was best correlated with crack width that allowed termites to pass through it. Termites often use plumbing penetrations of concrete slabs to enter a structure.
