The first series, of which this is volume one, is to cover the Massachusetts press, for in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay American journalism had its beginning, and here alone was continued with a single newspaper through a decade and a half, or till 1719. Except in the provinces of Pennsylvania and New York, and there only in the cities of Philadelphia and New York, journalism was not planted elsewhere till after the first quarter of a century had passed. The news of the Massachusetts press, however, was by no means con fined to that province. The field of the Massachusetts periodicals was all the English colonies in America, and in their columns was reported not only the news of the other colonies but that of the West Indies, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland, so far as news gathering facilities were effective in those primitive days.
