Book Synopsis Empire and Information by : Christopher Alan Bayly
Download or read book Empire and Information written by Christopher Alan Bayly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a penetrating account of the evolution of British intelligence gathering in India, C. A. Bayly shows how networks of Indian spies were recruited by the British to secure military, political and social information about their subjects. He also examines the social and intellectual origins of these 'native informants', and considers how the colonial authorities interpreted and often misinterpreted the information they supplied. It was such misunderstandings which ultimately contributed to the failure of the British to anticipate the rebellions of 1857. The author argues, however, that even before this, complex systems of debate and communication were challenging the political and intellectual dominance of the European rulers.
Book Synopsis The Agrarian System of Mughal India, 1556-1707 by : Irfan Habib
Download or read book The Agrarian System of Mughal India, 1556-1707 written by Irfan Habib and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book, published in 1963, presented a mass of critically analyzed material on the agrarian condition of pre-colonial India--a subject which until then had received little attention. Many of its key findings, particularly those concerning administrative institutions and the position of the zamindars, have become standard tools in the field. This revised and updated edition draws on extensive new research by the author and others, and it presents much that is new in both description and perception. It also includes an expanded bibliography, a new descriptive index, and new illustrations and maps.

Book Synopsis Political Agenda of Education by : Krishan Kumar
Download or read book Political Agenda of Education written by Krishan Kumar and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-04-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was first published (in 1991), Political Agenda of Education was hailed as an outstanding contribution to educational theory. This thoroughly revised edition sharpens the focus and explanatory range of the original framework. In particular, the author has incorporated the complex terrain of gender and girls` education while bringing in a more nuanced discussion of caste as a factor of equality in educational opportunity. The book is divided into two parts. Part I analyzes the circumstances surrounding the establishment of a colonial system of educational administration and the implications it had for both teaching and curriculum. Part II locates educational reform within the dynamics of the three major quests of the freedom struggle: the demand for equal participation in education by the lower castes; the quest for self-identity; and the idea of progress. Krishna Kumar uses the history of ideas to develop insights which are highly relevant for the challenges facing the system of education in India and the rest of South Asia today.
