Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peterborough Cathedral: A General, Architectural, and Monastic History The narrative, subsequent to the overthrow of Romanism, is briefer than that before it. There is this reason for the dilference. The Romanist always considered the church part of his religion: Hence, while he was true to himself, he took the same pride in it that the father takes in his own child. But to the Protestant the church became only a foster child. There was a legal but not a natural tie between them. The Protestant looked on the church as little other than his tent. It was a mere shelter from the seasons. It protected him from summer heats and winter forsts. He honored it as he honored wool and annel, but it was never an object of pride and ambition to him. Hence the connection, which between abbot and abbey had been close and affec tionate, became weak and indifferent between bishop and cathedral. There was no more interesting history of the building to trace out. The Protestant in the cathedral seemed like the shrimp in the shell of a lobster. He knew not how to occupy or to use his great usurped man sion. He could not even keep it together. Hence, till the recent efforts at restoration, the cathedral history of the English church was onlv a satirical record of neglect and decay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral Church of Peterborough: A Description of Its Fabric and a Brief History of the Episcopal See To specify all the authorities which have been made use of in each case would be difficult and tedious in this place. But amongst the general sources of information which have been almost invariably found useful are: (r) the great county histories, the value of which, especially in questions of genealogy and local records, is generally recognised; (2) the numerous papers by experts which appear from time to time in the Transactions of the Antiquarian and Archaeological Societies (3) the important documents made accessible in the series issued by the Master of the Rolls; (4) the well known works of Britton and Willis on the English Cathedrals and (5) the very excellent series of Handbooks to the Cathedrals, originated by the late Mr. John Murray, to which the reader may in most cases be referred for fuller detail, especially in reference to the histories of the respective sees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peterborough Cathedral Peterborough, we will go in search of that history, and, passing to the south of the west front, we will seek it in what is now known as the Laurel Court, a large quadrangle, having on the north side the whole length of the nave of the vast Norman church, and on the south, east, and west the remaining traces of the Cloisters which formerly surrounded this great square. The windows of these Cloisters were, before their destruction by Cromwell, filled, as indeed were all the windows both of the church and the monas tery, with painted glass. In the windows on the south side of the cloisters were represented scenes from the Old Testament Scriptures, on the east scenes from the life of our Blessed Lord, on the north were depicted figures of the kings from Peada downwards, and on the west the history of the monastery from its first foundation by King Peada to its restoration by King Edgar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Growth of the English Parish Church His small book is intended to be a companion and complement to the writer's book in the same series on The Ground Plan of the English Parish Church. In that book the growth of the ground plan is treated with necessarily scanty reference to the circumstances to which, directly or indirectly, that growth is due. Some attempt is made in the present volume to supply an account of the historical conditions amid which our parish churches were built, to say something of the builders, and to remove the popular idea, still current even among educated people, that our architecture is mainly due to the profuse benefactions of the religious orders. A special chapter on chantry foundations, which played so large a part in the life of the later middle ages, follows the general historical chapter. The western tower, the porch, and the chancel are then described with more fulness than was possible in the description of the ground plan; and the decoration and furniture of the various parts of the church are treated in the closing chapter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Parish Church: An Account of the Chief Building Types of Their Materials During Nine Centuries An endeavour too is made in these pages to set forth, after a succinct fashion, the undoubted but often forgotten fact that our ancestors, whilst regarding the church as primarily devoted to the worship of God and to the continuous round of the expression of their highest Faith, considered that the soul and body were so intimately connected that they habitually used the nave for purposes which we call secular or civil. All this tended in the direction of every class uniting in the maintenance and development of the parish church. More than usual attention is herein given to the Materials from which our churches were constructed, and how their shape and size so largely depended upon the nature of the stone by which they were surrounded, or by its absence and the frequency of flint or timber. It had been intended to follow this up by a chapter or section on Local Types, mapping out England into more or less definite divisions' but it was found, after some progress had been made, that the subject was too big for inclusion in a book of limited size, that it had as yet been scarcely sufficiently studied, and that it was better on the whole to give more attention to planning and to the successive periods of architecture.
