She makes a beginning on the accessibility problem by presenting three texts on interpreting sheep livers as the first of a projected complete series on the divinatory texts from the world's oldest extant general library. The edition is based on a catalogue, compiled by Ulla Jeyes as part of what was to be a collaboration on the project before Jeyes' untimely death, of the collections in the British Museum. It argues that the Akkadian, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek works discussed are all part of a developing scribal discourse of “mantic historiography” by which scribes blend their local traditions of history writing and predictive texts to produce a new mode of historiographic expression. This in turn calls into question the use and usefulness of traditional literary categories such as “apocalypse” to analyze such works.

This literature, Winitzer concludes, represents an early form of scientific reasoning that began to appreciate the centrality of texts and textual interpretation in this civilization’s production, organization, and conception of knowledge.
