Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valley Towns of Connecticut The Connecticut Valley is a very thankful object for such studies. It is really a double valley, being divided into two unequal parts by the chain of trap ridges which extends from New Haven'to Holyoke and beyond. The valley east of the ridges has the present river; it will therefore be designated by the name of River Valley. The valley west of the ridges has at present no connected watercourse; its line of lowest depression is divided up among several smaller watercourses running in different directions but leading practically nowhere. According to its drainage it may be divided into two parts in its turn: the northern part, generally speaking, drains into the Connecticut by way of the Farmington River, and its southern limit is, approximately, the town of Cheshire; we shall designate it as the Farmington Valley. The southern part drains into the Sound by various small rivers converging more or less toward New Haven, and it will be called the New Haven Valley (fig. I). This natural division into an eastern, or River Valley, western, or Farmington Valley, and southern, or. New Haven Valley, we shall find repeated in. The political history of the Valley settlements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Connecticut River: And the Valley of the Connecticut, Three Hundred and Fifty Miles From Mountain to Sea The story of the Connecticut River and the Valley of the Connecticut is so mingled with the history of the country, and particularly of the formative periods, that in the proper telling of it much of history must also be related. Accordingly in the following pages there will be found blended with descriptions of the longest river in New England and one of the fairest valleys in the country, narrations of Indian and colonial wars; of the establishment or evolution of democratic government; of the pioneer development of internal improvements and of industries; of the planting and upbuilding of many and varied institutions of learning, colleges, academies, and schools, for higher education - more than on any other river in the world - and withal of the growth and unfolding of the genuine American character. In the study of my subject, besides consulting the various histories, colonial, state, county, and town, bearing upon it, historical monographs, family papers, diaries, and contemporary narrative, I have gone, so far as they were accessible, to original authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Along the Connecticut River The four Connecticut lakes which store the waters coming down from the spongy trout brooks and start the long river on its course lie some sixteen hundred feet nearer the clouds than does the river's mouth. Back Lake, First, Second, and Third Connecticut Lakes are their names, and although not gems they are deserving of something more descriptive than numbers. They all lie within the town of Pittsburg which, with its 360 square miles, is about ten times the area of the average New England township, but it has a population of only 67 1 which means more than half a square mile to every inhabitant, plenty of room to provide a refuge for all the non-aryans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The River Towns of Connecticut: A Study of Wethersfield, Hartford, and Windsor The spirit of trade inherent in the Teutonic life, and given broader and newer fields by contact with an unopened country, led to the first and more isolated settlements in the Connecticut valley. The English sense and mother-wit, sharpened on the Dutch grindstone, laid the foundation for the future Yankee shrewdness, so proverbial in all New England, and peculiarly so in the land of steady habits. This land, "excellently watered and liberal to the husbandman," was, up to 1632, chiefly conspicuous for its hemp, beaver, and petty Indian tribes. It lay, almost unknown, fairly between the settlements of the Dutch at New Amsterdam and Fort Orange, and of the English at Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay, and offered a tempting field for the first quarrel between the kindred nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New England's Connecticut River meanders 410 miles south from the Canadian border to Long Island Sound. After thousands of years of peaceful habitation by Indigenous people came 400 years of development around European settlements, farmsteads, shipping ports, and manufacturing mills. Farmers, boatbuilders, quarrymen, and industrialists benefitted from the river valley's fertile plains, geological resources, and waterpower. Ready access to markets at Boston, New York, the West Indies, and Europe fueled the growth of the valley's towns and major cities such as Hartford and Springfield. The valley has been home to consequential social reformers, authors, and intellectuals. Its bucolic settings attracted artists who came to the renowned colonies at Cornish and Lyme, steamboat tourists, and urban transplants with modern lifestyles. The most important houses they built--many of which are designated national historic landmarks and open to the public--and some newly discovered properties are highlighted here for their architectural significance and rich historical associations.
