Book excerpt: Shortly after Ponce de Leon discovered La Florida in 1513, early Spanish settlers found a large and sheltered bay on the Gulf of Mexico. The bay became known as Pensacola after the Penzacola Indians who lived along the shore. In 1698, the first permanent colony was established by pioneers who recognized the strategic importance of a fine harbor with protective barrier islands and a high bluff, or barranca, on the mainland across from a defensible mouth. For centuries the bay was fortified and refortified. Battles raged in four wars, and five nations raised their flags along the harbor. Pensacola Bay: A Military History traces the rich military history of the bay from Spanish times to the present-day Naval Air Station Pensacola, home of the Navy's Blue Angels. The book presents over 200 black-and-white images that highlight the acquisition of Florida by the United States in 1821, the construction of fortifications and naval installations, the Civil War, both World Wars, the Old Navy Yard, the Naval Air Station, and present-day military activity.

From its earliest incarnation as a town of unpaved streets, through the devastating fire of 1880 to the modern city it would become, this Florida city thrives on challenges. Historic Photos of Pensacola captures the history of Pensacola from the Civil War through the 1960s in nearly 200 black-and-white archival photographs. Author Jacquelyn Tracy Wilson, a fifth-generation Pensacola native, captures the spirit of Pensacola—from the commonplace to the quintessential—in a century-long journey through this beautiful town.

The why is no mystery: We want to create a place our children and grandchildren will want to be. We also know the what: We need to attract investments, provide good jobs, and create lively downtowns where citizens will want to work, live, shop and play. What s usually missing is the how. In Building a Vibrant Community, Quint Studer addresses all three aspects, but mainly focuses on the last one. How can your community get from where it is now to where it wants to be?

Acclaimed photographer Richard Sexton's evocative black-and-white images capture this often-overlooked terrainthrowing into haunting relief the marshes, forests, and bayous from the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle. Sexton focuses on the intersection between human culture and natural phenomena, creating a body of work attuned to the passage of time, loss, and renewal. Essays by museum directors J. Richard Gruber and John Lawrence place the images in the context of southern photography, while horticulturist Randy Harelson illuminates the environmental challenges unique to the region. Terra Incognita is the first book to so strikingly illustrate the vulnerability, resilience, and splendor of America's third coast.

This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first U.S. Navy aerial photographs were taken in 1913 in support of fleet exercises off Guantanamo, Cuba. Following WWI, a Navy Photographic expedition went north, making the first aerial mapping photos of the Alaskan territory. WWII found Navy shuttermen in the Pacific theatre, performing pre- and post-attack reconnaissance, along with "hitting the beach" to record the war as it unfolded. Shortly after, Navy photographic units were in the Pacific to record early atomic bomb tests. The Navy's aerial photo reconnaissance mission, both at the front end with the weaponless aircrews and the output of thousands of images and photo interpretation, continued to develop through the mid-20th century. The last aerial photo plane in the Navy's inventory was retired after flying to the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles International Airport in Fairfax County, Virginia. The 74 year odyssey of Navy and Marine Corps aerial reconnaissance photography was finished.
