Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the exploration and birth of America is told afresh through the unique prism of hand-colored maps and engravings of the period. Before photography and television, it was printed and hand-colored maps that brought home the thrill of undiscovered lands and the possibilities of exploration, while guiding armies on all sides through the Indian Wars and the clashes of the American Revolution. Only by looking through the prism of these maps, can we truly understand how and why America developed the way it did. Mapping America illuminates with scene-setting text and more than 150 color images—from the exotic and fanciful maps of Renaissance explorers to the magnificent maps of the Golden Age and the thrilling battle-maps and charts of the American Revolutionary War, in addition to paintings from the masters of eighteenth century art, scores of photographs, and detailed diagrams. In total, this informative and lushly illustrated volume developed by rare maps collector Neal Asbury, host of “Neal Asbury’s Made in America,” and National Geographic historian Jean-Pierre Isbouts offers a new and immersive look at the ambition, the struggle, and the glory that attended and defined the exploration and making of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from This Is Our City: An Exhibition of Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings and Prints, March 11-April 13, 1941 The period of depression after the First World War and the great boom followed by unem ployment and the rumblings of social revolution was reflected in the work of the contemporary artist who, influenced by the resulting isms, often turned from commentator to propagandist. The spectacular physical growth of the city during the boom era with tower after tower rising higher and higher in frenzied competition, added to the theme which inspired some of the most vital artistic expression of our time. New York became more and more the art center of America and the majority of artists working in this country, both native and foreign, now live here. It is fortunate for us and for future generations that the drama of this extraordinary period has been recorded in terms of lasting significance. The majority of artists included in the exhibition are contemporary and all of the works shown have been carefully selected for their significant interpretation of twentieth century New York. The exhibition includes 265 works by 101 artists divided as follows: 86 oils, 46 water colors and pastels, 38 drawings, 95 prints and occupies all of the space in the museum. Some artists are represented by three or four paintings and many by several mediums. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
