Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Albert Manucy's book continues to serve as a catalyst for architectural preservation in St. Augustine and to inspire similar works elsewhere. His sketches, which explain this colonial architecture, delight as much as they inform. The book also serves as a gentle reminder to Yankees that Florida was civilized before the Puritans settled New England."--F. Blair Reeves, chairman, Historic Resource Committee, Florida Association/American Institute of Architects As architecture documents history, The Houses of St. Augustine records architecture, preserving and interpreting the history of housing in the oldest city in the continental United States. The charming two-story house so distinctive to St. Augustine offers tangible evidence of Spanish settlement in the New World. Long before Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded St. Augustine, houses similar to the loggia-and-balcony houses of St. Augustine existed in his home province of Oviedo and in nearby Santander. The special feature of the casa Santanderina design, which Manucy calls the "St. Augustine Plan," is a roofed balcony over the street or the yard that anticipates the "Florida room" of this century. On both the north coast of Spain and the northeast coast of Florida, the porch excludes the cold wind and admits the sun in winter; it lets in the breeze and tempers the hot sun in summer. Upon its first publication thirty years ago, this classic volume contributed to an awakening of interest in St. Augustine architecture; it continues to be the basic reference tool for colonial period restoration and for the ongoing archaeological and anthropological research in the city. In detailed drawings and nontechnical language, the book identifies basic house types and records their dimensions, construction techniques, materials, and design details from foundations to roofs. It has been the cornerstone that enabled the St. Augustine government to frame architecture guidelines for preservation and restoration of existing historic buildings, reconstruction of lost structures, and construction of contemporary homes in designs that are compatible with the historic architecture. Albert Manucy worked for thirty-three years for the National Park Service as a historian, restorationist, and museum planner. He has written many books on architecture and history, including Seeing St. Augustine, a publication of the Federal Writers Project American Guide Series, and The Building of Castillo de San Marcos. He has received the Amigos de los Castillos silver medal from the government of Spain and awards from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and the Eastern National Park and Monument Association, and he was granted the Order of La Florida by the city of St. Augustine. Manucy was born in St. Augustine and has witnessed the loss of many historic houses. His incentive to write this volume came from the realization that St. Augustine architecture is unique and needed analysis in order to ensure accurate preservation and interpretation. Published in cooperation with the St. Augustine Historical Society

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida's antebellum architecture reflects the state's singular history and the realities faced and enjoyed by her early citizens. Threats from Native Americans dictated that the homes of early frontiersmen incorporate in their design defensive features, and many felt the need to locate within small towns. Many planters held close family and business ties with the older, more established South, which encouraged elaborate homes that could easily fit into the plantation architecture of South Carolina, Georgia, or Mississippi. Influences from the state's two ruling countries-Spain and England-also gave way to unique design. Florida's Antebellum Homes features images of buildings that incorporate various combinations of these design features. In addition, some of the public structures shown here reflect the emerging senses of personal affluence, civic pride, and political development. Unfortunately, some of these buildings no longer exist; they fell prey to natural catastrophes, unbridled expansion, and the relentless march of Florida's exacting climate. Many, however, remain in pristine condition and invite the public to appreciate them today, much as earlier Floridians reveled in their stateliness.

From slaves to millionaires, African Americans from all walks of life resided in cabins, homes, and stately mansions. The lives of millionaires, educators, businessmen, community leaders, and innovators in Florida's history are explored in each residence. Mary McLeod Bethune, A.L. Lewis, and D.A. Dorsey are a few of the prominent African Americans who not only resided in the state of Florida but also created opportunities for other blacks to further their lives in education and ownership of property and to have a better quality of life. One of the most humanistic traits found in history is the home of someone who has added something of value to society. Today, some of these residences serve as house museums, community art galleries, cultural institutions, and monuments that interpret and share the legacy of their owners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Miami Beach-based architecture and interior design firm presents luxurious private residences from Orlando to Key West, reinterpreting Florida styles from Mediterranean to Art Deco. Though the husband-and-wife team of Taylor & Taylor travel widely to find design inspiration in the U.S., Europe, South and Central America, and the Caribbean—they always retain their first love: the historic architecture of Florida itself and its blend of rustic and romantic, from Italianate palazzos to Art Deco hotels and Key West’s bungalows. Classic Florida Style presents ten coastal residences in resplendent photography to match the tropical hues and lush natural surroundings of the sunshine state. Design lovers will see not only homes that integrate orange groves and sunsets reflecting off Biscayne Bay, but also gorgeous interiors that take full advantage of Florida’s crystalline light—superbly crafted spaces in which the ocean breezes can almost be felt ruffling the curtains. Locales range from a private island near Key West, to Coral Gables, Fisher Island, and Lake Thonotosassa, northeast of Tampa—even the South Carolina home of one Florida-minded football giant, a former quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. Whether drawing on the architecture of British Colonial Bermuda, or the Spanish-inspired designs of George Washington Smith and Wallace Neff in California, each home takes full advantage of glamorous indoor-outdoor living and a seamless blend of native Florida materials and singular antiques.
