This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German immigrants created leafy beer gardens here nearly two centuries ago, establishing Bucktown as the heart of entertainment in downtown Davenport for generations. In 1916, the founding of the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra at the Burtis Opera House embodied the neighborhood's reputation for high culture. The numerous saloons and theaters, as well as the forty-two documented brothels that flourished within two blocks, lent a bawdy side to the good times. Varied industries thrived through World War II, and downtown bustled with shoppers visiting department stores like Petersen's. Later, the neighborhood struggled and declined as a farming crisis hit the region hard. With revitalized landmarks like the magnificent Hotel Blackhawk and the historic Redstone Building, the community is growing more vibrant as a place to live, work and play. Author Jonathan Turner explores this dynamic history and transformation.

Book Synopsis Iowa Historic Property Study by : Jennifer A. Price
Download or read book Iowa Historic Property Study written by Jennifer A. Price and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1935 Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge is being documented at this time to fulfill the requirements of the Memorandum of Agreement regarding the removal of the Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge and the Iowana Farms Milk Company building for the proposed improvements to Interstate 74 in Bettendorf, Iowa, and Moline, Illinois. The 1959 twin suspension bridge will be removed as well, but it was determined to be ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Discussion of the history of the 1959 twin span is included, however, in the current report as part of the overall history of the Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge. Fieldwork for the documentation occurred in November 2009 and October 2010. Limitations on photography included limited shoreline access on the Illinois side, making good views of the bridge from the south somewhat challenging. Also, photographs on the bridge deck were not possible because of interstate traffic and prohibitions on pedestrian traffic.
Book Synopsis Lincoln's Greatest Case: The River, the Bridge, and the Making of America by : Brian McGinty

This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of how one sensational trial propelled a self-taught lawyer and a future president into the national spotlight. In May of 1856, the steamboat Effie Afton barreled into a pillar of the Rock Island Bridge, unalterably changing the course of American transportation history. Within a year, long-simmering tensions between powerful steamboat interests and burgeoning railroads exploded, and the nation’s attention, absorbed by the Dred Scott case, was riveted by a new civil trial. Dramatically reenacting the Effie Afton case—from its unlikely inception, complete with a young Abraham Lincoln’s soaring oratory, to the controversial finale—this “masterful” (Christian Science Monitor) account gives us the previously untold story of how one sensational trial propelled a self-taught lawyer and a future president into the national spotlight.

Book Synopsis The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle by : Michael O. Johnston
Download or read book The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle written by Michael O. Johnston and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla concentrates on the tourist element of the Mississippi River with a focus on the media construction of an annual floating event that occurs on the river. Michael O. Johnston shows that the canoeing and kayaking event itself is void of meaning; it is the news media that brings these events to life through real world accounts about a kayaker who nearly collided with a fifty-five-foot yacht, a person dressed up as a pirate with a live parrot as a prop, a guy with a Floatzilla logo tattooed on his hand, and the death of a longtime friend and cornerstone of the event. Johnston draws from research across multiple disciplines to explain how the media constructs the natural and bodily experiences canoers and kayakers say they have while attending Floatzilla. He discusses the importance of meaning and sense of place in maintaining a connectedness between the built environment, nature, and the people who attend this event. Ultimately, the author contends that social meaning is essential for humans to make sense of their surroundings.

Book Synopsis Quad Cities Beer by : Michael McCarty
Download or read book Quad Cities Beer written by Michael McCarty and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quad Cities have a rich history of brewing that started with the influx of German citizens in the 1800s. Breweries were established on both sides of the Mississippi River. Some of these historic breweries managed to reopen after Prohibition, but national competition ultimately closed the last of these stalwarts in 1956. In 1989, Iowa created a special class "A" brewpub permit, and the first of many brewpubs in the area, Front Street Pub & Eatery, opened in 1992. Blue Cat Brew Pub, on the Illinois side of the river, opened shortly after. The brewing renaissance has helped to establish the Quad Cities as a craft beer destination. Join authors Michael McCarty and Kristin DeMarr as they celebrate the heady heritage of the region.

Book Synopsis The Rock Island Line by : Bill Marvel
Download or read book The Rock Island Line written by Bill Marvel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the rich history of the legendary railroad that spanned the American Midwest in this beautifully illustrated volume. Beginning operations in the mid-nineteenth century, the Rock Island Line served farms and small-town America for more than 140 years. One of the earliest railroads to build westward from Chicago, it was the first to span the Mississippi, advancing the frontier, bringing settlers into the West, and hauling their crops to market. Rock Island’s celebrated Rocket passenger trains also set a standard for speed and service, with suburban runs as familiar to Windy City commuters as the Loop. For most of its existence, the Rock battled competitors much larger and richer than itself. When it finally succumbed, the result was one of the largest business bankruptcies ever. Today, as its engines and stock travel the busy main lines operated by other carriers, the Rock Island Line lives on in the hearts of those whom it employed and served.
