Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong grounding in basic histology is essential for all pathologists. However, there had always been a gap between histology and pathology in which histologic information specifically for the pathologist was often lacking. Histology for Pathologists deals with the microscopic features of normal human tissues, from the perspective of the surgical pathologist. This is the only text that uses human (vs. animal) tissues for the histology. It is the best reference in the literature for information on normal histology, and, as such, is essential for all clinical pathologists. Written by pathologists for pathologists, the new edition updates the pathologist's understanding of normal histology up to date with the incremental advances made in the last five years. The 3rd edition has become a "classic" purchased by virtually all residents beginning their pathology training, as well as pathologists in practice. The 4th edition builds on that substantial foundation. The table of contents remains essentially the same with the exception of some changes in authorship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was written prior to 1991 and it seemed appropriate to revise and update the text in view of the rapid expansion in information which has occurred in the last decade. Furthermore, in the first edition, the reproduction of some of the illustrations was not of sufficient standard to be of value to the reader. Accordingly some of the inadequate figures have been replaced by colour figures which have been inserted into the text. Colour has also been included because many histopathological illustrations, e. g. special stains such as Gram, PAS, trichrome stains etc. , and immunohistochemical reactions, are much better appreciated. With regard to references, I have taken advantage of the currently available access to all the medical literat ure, which is what I anticipate will be the course of action of the reader. Glasgow, 2001 Acknowledgements It is a pleasure to re cord the support I have received in the last decade from Professors Wallace Foulds, Colin Kirkness and Gordon Dutton and from Mr Bertil Damato in their continuing efforts to educate me in the subtleties of clinical ophthalmology. I am particularly indebted to Dr Sarah Coupland who provided the information on lymphoid neoplasia which is included in this book and I must thank Dr Weng Sehu who established the computer equipment which has been so valuable in the preparation of the new illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easy to be confident that an appropriate body of advice is available to candidates about the content of an examination once you have passed it. Prospectively, the Primary and Final Examinations of the Royal College of Pathologists will appear to most to involve the assimilation of what seems at the time an inexhaustible volume of data, and the recent change in the College examination system has not diminished this concern for the majority of candidates. The guidelines for training for the new Part I examination state that this is the "major hurdle of the MRCPath" and it is clear that it will determine whether candidates are suitable for training which will permit them to practise independently as consultants after Part II. These general aims and objectives do not answer questions such as "How much do I need to know about glomerulonephritis?" or "Where do I stop with the lymphomas?" This text attempts to resolve the difficulty of knowing what standard to aim at, using College questions as its starting point. It concentrates on the essential basis of any single answer; many candidates for the new three-year examination will know more about individual topics than is stated here. However, it is the breadth of information required which is a feature of College examinations and this text should help with this problem.

As a result, the pathology intern often comes into residency unprepared. Completely illustrated in color, this book lays the foundation of practical pathology and provides a scaffold on which to build a knowledge base. It includes basic introductory material and progresses through each organ system. Within each chapter, there is a brief review of salient normal histology, a discussion of typical specimen types, a strategic approach to the specimen, and a discussion of how the multitude of different diagnoses relate to each other.

Book excerpt: Molecular Histopathology and Tissue Biomarkers in Drug and Diagnostic Development gathers diverse experts to present state of the art guidance and application of histopathology in drug development settings ranging from discovery research to human clinical trials. While many current applications of quantitative histology and molecular pathology in the biopharmaceutical industry are focused on oncology, this volume in addition explores non-oncologic disease areas including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, arthritis, celiac disease, myeloproliferative disorders, neurology, and wound healing. The authors write from years of experience in diagnostic practice and pharmaceutical drug development, aiming to educate pharmaceutical and academic scientists how to best use tissue to diagnose disease and improve the process of drug development. As part of the Methods in Pharmacology and Toxicology series, this volume is designed to provide wisdom and examples that others can follow and apply as part of drug development. Comprehensive and practical, Molecular Histopathology and Tissue Biomarkers in Drug and Diagnostic Development will inform and enlighten both tissue-focused and non-tissue-focused drug development professionals about better use and interpretation of the multidimensional data contained in a tissue biopsy.
