This series (also known as the WHO Blue Books) is regarded as the gold standard for the diagnosis of tumours and comprises a unique synthesis of histopathological diagnosis with digital and molecular pathology. These authoritative and concise reference books provide indispensable international standards for anyone involved in the care of patients with cancer or in cancer research, underpinning individual patient treatment as well as research into all aspects of cancer causation, prevention, therapy, and education. This volume will be of particular interest to pathologists, oncologists, surgeons, and epidemiologists who manage or research soft tissue and bone tumours. Sections are included on all recognized neoplasms of the soft tissue and bone, as well as on genetic tumour syndromes affecting these sites. Since the previous edition, there have been changes based on recent molecular and genetic information, with impact on clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Detection and characterization of bone tumors with imaging remains a big challenge for every radiologist notwithstanding the impressive progress achieved by the introduction of several new imaging modalities. Moreover, new concepts in surgical and oncological treatment of these lesions require from the radiologist appropriate and focused answers to the specifc questions asked by the referring physicians in order to choose the best therapeutic approach for the in- vidual patient. Tis comprehensive textbook describes in detail the possibilities and limits of all moda- ties, including MRI, CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiological procedures, employed for the modern imaging of tumoral and tumor-like lesions of bone. Teir role in the diagnosis, surgical staging, biopsy and assessment of response to therapy is discussed in detail, covering all tumor subtypes as well as their specifc anatomical location.Well selected and technically imp- cable illustrations strongly enhance the didactic value of this work. I am very much indebted and grateful to the three editors: A. Mark Davies, Murali Sundaram and Steven L. J. James, world authorities in musculoskeletal radiology, for their superb scientifc achievement in preparing and editing this wonderful volume as well as for their individual ch- ters. I would also like to thank the large international group of collaborating authors, who are also widely acknowledged for their specifc expertise in the area of bone tumors, for their outstanding contributions.

The final chapters are devoted to extra-skeletal skeletogenic tumors and pseudo-tumoral lesions that may be confused with true tumors. To emphasis the indissoluble nature of the anatomic and clinical relations, the discussions are preceded by one or two clinical cases. The author imparts his personal experience without ignoring the material in the literature on the subject. Over 1100 radiographic and histologic illustrations. The references mention recent studies but also review the classical studies leading to definition of the various disease entities. The chief differential diagnoses and the pitfalls to be avoided are reviewed in an insert at the end of each chapter.

In the case of animals, particular emphasis is placed on dogs. This book is comprised of 15 chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the principles of diagnosis, including biopsy and bone scanning, and methods of treatment employed for bone tumors in human and animal patients, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The following chapters focus on bone cysts and benign tumors of osseous origin; osteosarcoma in humans and animals such as dogs, cats, and mice; and tumors of cartilaginous origin such as solitary enchondroma, enchondromatosis, chondroblastoma, and chondromyxoid fibroma. Tumors arising from fibrous, fatty, neurological, or undifferentiated connective tissue are also considered, along with those arising from bone marrow or lymphoid tissue. This book concludes by offering suggestions for future research. This text is intended for clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists, both medical and veterinary, as well as for biologists, biochemists, and radiation physicists.

Book excerpt: This book, now in a second revised edition, casts light on the often complex diagnosis of musculoskeletal tumors and tumor-like conditions by drawing on the experience of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute during more than 100 years of treatment and research in the field. The different entities are described from a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting clinical, radiological, and histological correlations. Particular emphasis is placed on differential diagnosis, which often needs to take into account nontumoral conditions. The recent identification of further significant biological and genetic features, and the impact of these discoveries on the classification of round cell tumors, vascular lesions, and spindle/pleomorphic entities in bone, is also extensively discussed. The Rizzoli case archive dates back to September 1900 and contains the original material relating to more than 29,000 bone lesions and 11,000 soft tissue lesions. It is a fabulously rich resource, and this book will be invaluable for pathologists, radiologists, and clinicians at all levels of experience.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few years, a considerable number of monographs on bone tumors have been published. They are mainly restricted to bone tumors as clinical-pathological entities, since their diagnosis, more than that of other tumors, requires the interdisciplinary cooperation between orthopedic specialist, radiologist, and pathologist. However, investiga tions concerning the histogenesis of bone tumors are rather limited, although they might be helpful in explaining the unique morphological heterogeneity of tumors of the skeletal system. Furthermore, the histo genetic approach in the study of bone tumors may facilitate the inter pretation of the advanced cytobiological methods available for improv ing classification and diagnosis. Therefore, this volume presents recent pathological advances in the biological characterization of bone tumors. A major chapter deals with the differential diagnosis of Ewing's sarcoma as regards its demarcation from the so-called neuroectodermal tumor of bone. The analysis of the ground substances in bone-forming tumors may be helpful for their classification. Therefore the volume includes a chapter on the biochemical and histochemical analysis of different osteosarcoma types. Recently it has become clear that in addition to different collagen types which are not specific for bone tissue, several bone-specific proteins occur, one of which is osteonectin. Its distribu tion is obviously important for the classification and diagnosis of osteo blastic tumors. Proliferative behavior is of major importance for the diagnosis of malignant tumors.
