Download or read book Cultured Force written by Barnett Singer and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging gaps between intellectual history, biography, and military/colonial history, Barnett Singer and John Langdon provide a challenging, readable interpretation of French imperialism and some of its leading figures from the early modern era through the Fifth Republic. They ask us to rethink and reevaluate, pulling away from the usual shoal of simplistic condemnation. In a series of finely-etched biographical studies, and with much detail on both imperial culture and wars (including World War I and II), they offer a balanced, deep, strong portrait of key makers and defenders of the French Empire, one that will surely stimulate much historical work in the field.

Book excerpt: These articles are mainly concerned with medieval French literature, particularly those areas in which the honorand of the volume, Rupert T. Pickens, has distinguished himself: Old French Arthurian romance, Marie de France, chanson de geste, later poetry (including Villon), and the Occitan troubadour lyric. Among the contributors are some of the most significant scholars from the U.S.A., Canada, France, Switzerland, and the U.K. working in Old French studies today. The volume will be of interest to specialists in Old French, Occitan, and medieval literature generally. Some of the articles deal with relatively unknown works, and all are informed by current developments in medieval literary studies

Book Synopsis The United States and the European Right, 1945-1955 by : Deborah Kisatsky
Download or read book The United States and the European Right, 1945-1955 written by Deborah Kisatsky and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nazi Germany's defeat in May 1945 commenced a decade-long allied effort to democratize the former Reich. The United States simultaneously began sheltering scientists, industrialists, and military officers complicit in Nazi crimes. What explained this conflict between the spirit and practice of denazification? Did U.S. Cold War anticommunism simply replace antifascism in the postwar period? Did Americans favor rightists over leftists in a quest to restore "order" in Europe?" "In this groundbreaking study, Deborah Kisatsky shows that opportunity, not order, galvanized U.S. foreign policy, and that American dealings with the European Right were more complex than has been presumed. U.S. leaders cooperated with West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to achieve shared Atlanticist goals. And the United States co-opted nationalistic fighters into a secret stay-behind net of the Bund Deutscher Jugend-Technischer Dienst. But allied leaders jointly worked to contain such vocal neutralist-nationalists as the ex-Nazi Otto Strasser. Cooperation, co-optation, and containment of French and Italian, as of German, rightists advanced American hegemony in Europe. These strategies extended techniques of social control perfected within the United States and synthesized domestic and international systems of power in the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis The Spectacular Past by : Maurice Samuels
Download or read book The Spectacular Past written by Maurice Samuels and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Struggling to make sense of the Revolution of 1789, the French in the nineteenth century increasingly turned to visual forms of historical representation in a variety of media. Maurice Samuels shows how new kinds of popular entertainment introduced during and after the Revolution transformed the past into a spectacle. The wax display (in which visitors circulated amid life-size statues of historical figures), the phantasmagoria show (in which images of historical personages were projected onto smoke or invisible screens), and the panorama (in which spectators viewed giant circular canvases depicting historical scenes) employed new optical technologies to entice crowds of spectators. Such entertainments, Samuels asserts, provided bourgeois audiences with an illusion of mastery over the past, allowing them to picture their new role as historical agents.Samuels demonstrates how the spectacular mode of historical representation pervaded historiography, drama, and the novel during the Romantic period. He then argues that the early Realist fiction of Balzac and Stendhal emerged as a critique of the spectacular historical imagination. By investigating how postrevolutionary France envisioned the past, Samuels illuminates a vital moment in the cultural history of modernity.

Book Synopsis Rambling on Saint Martin by : Gérard M. Hunt
Download or read book Rambling on Saint Martin written by Gérard M. Hunt and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grard M. Hunt is a man without a country, trying to piece together in essays, editorials and scholarship a country of his own from three quite separate nations: French Colonial by birth and upbringing; United States by military service and higher education; and Canada by profession in teaching and scholarship. The three have by no means come together in a single national unity. His homing tendency seems to be towards St. Martin, but St. Martin is itself an amalgam a clump of volcanic earth still divided, for no good reason, between two independent sovereigns thousands of miles away. He is a unitary citizen without an integrated polity. (...) Many of Grards essays are grave and penetrating trials. Many are sentimental catching up with childhood comrades, sharing grief over a lost friend or relative. Several of these discourses are critiques of the wayward tendencies of French efforts to govern Saint-Martin from Paris through Guadeloupe. The most serious and extensive of essays aim at encouraging a greater sense of historical awareness and of community solidarity among St. Martiners ...
