Book excerpt: A sweeping history of intimacy and family life in France during the age of revolution The French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars devastated Europe for nearly a quarter of a century. The Soldier’s Reward recovers the stories of soldiers and their relationships to family and domestic life during this period, revealing how prolonged warfare transformed family and gender dynamics and gave rise to new kinds of citizenship. In this groundbreaking work combining social, cultural, gender, and military history, Jennifer Ngaire Heuer vividly describes how men fought for years with only fleeting moments of peace. Combatants were promised promotion, financial gain, and patriotic glory. They were also rewarded for their service by being allowed to return home to waiting families and love interests, and with marriages that were arranged and financially supported by the state. Heuer explores competing ideas of masculinity in France, as well as the experiences of the men and women who participated in such marriages. She argues that we cannot fully understand the changing nature of war and peace in this period without considering the important roles played by family, gender, and romantic entanglements. Casting new light on a turbulent era of mass mobilization and seemingly endless conflict, The Soldier’s Reward shows how, from the Revolution through the Restoration, war, intimacy, and citizenship intersected in France in new and unexpected ways.

Book excerpt: From the 'old world' to the 'new' and back again, this transnational history of the performance and reception of Bizet's Carmen – whose subject has become a modern myth and its heroine a symbol – provides new understanding of the opera's enduring yet ever-evolving and resituated presence and popularity. This book examines three stages of cultural transfer: the opera's establishment in the repertoire; its performance, translation, adaptation and appropriation in Europe, the Americas and Australia; its cultural 'work' in Soviet Russia, in Japan in the era of Westernisation, in southern, regionalist France and in Carmen's 'homeland', Spain. As the volume reveals the ways in which Bizet's opera swiftly travelled the globe from its Parisian premiere, readers will understand how the story, the music, the staging and the singers appealed to audiences in diverse geographical, artistic and political contexts.

Book excerpt: For the first time, a group of distinguished authors come together to provide an authoritative exploration of the cultural history of tragedy in the Middle Ages. Reports of the so-called death of medieval tragedy, they argue, have been greatly exaggerated; and, for the Middle Ages, the stakes couldn't be higher. Eight essays offer a blueprint for future study as they take up the extensive but much-neglected medieval engagement with tragic genres, modes, and performances from the vantage points of gender, politics, theology, history, social theory, anthropology, philosophy, economics, and media studies. The result? A recuperated medieval tragedy that is as much a branch of literature as it is of theology, politics, law, or ethics and which, at long last, rejoins the millennium-long conversation about one of the world's most enduring art forms. Each chapter takes a different theme as its focus: forms and media; sites of performance and circulation; communities of production and consumption; philosophy and social theory; religion, ritual and myth; politics of city and nation; society and family, and gender and sexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas before 1700 music was often produced for the local or regional market, from 1700 on music publishers produced music in such a way that it could be sold internationally. During the nineteenth century one can easily speak of mass production in this respect. The studies in this volume approach the topic from a number of different angles. The first four contributions (headed Cities and Countries) study certain places or areas in Europe and analyse the ways in which music was created and moved from one place to another. Manuscripts or prints of music have to be produced and to be sold, and somebody must buy them to bring them to a different place. The studies in the second part (headed Publishing and Purchasing) deal with the processes involved in the production music and its dissemination via the music trade. The studies bundled in the third part of the present book, headed Repertoires and Reception, do not study the source side of the dissemination, but rather its receiving side, through the examination of repertoires to be found in certain places or in certain regions. When music is transferred from one place to another, changes may well take place, due to the variations in musical cultures from one part of Europe to another. The last part of the present volume (headed Assimilations and Appropriations), deals with these issues. The present volume on The Circulation of Music in Europe 1600-1900 is the outcome of a research group with the same name that formed a part of the research project Musical Life in Europe 1600-1900, launched by the European science foundation in Strasbourg.

Book excerpt: Mrs Tersa Cornelys was a unique figure in 18th-century Europe. A Venetian-born opera singer well known on the stages of Vienna, Bayreuth and Holland, she came to London in 1759 aged 36, and opened the capital's first real concert venue and nightclub - Carlisle House in Soho Square. next 20 years. Outrageous, ingenious and indomitable, Mrs Cornelys enjoyed immense wealth and success during her lifetime, but although she earned a small fortune from carlisle house, she borrowed extensively, in common with many Londoners of the time, seldom paying her debts. her. Undaunted, Mrs Cornelys made a series of spectacular comebacks - at one point as a purveyor of asses' milk in Knightsbridge, in a salon entirely decorated with fragments of coloured looking-glass. She remained a working businesswoman well into her 70s. She died as a result of breast cancer in the Fleet Debtors' Prison in 1797.
